AT&T axes unlimited data, unveils tethering price
Currently unlimited data plans for existing iPhone and iPad customers are still in effect. However, once contract renewals come up, don't be surprised if you have to wave bye-bye to unlimited data. The press release did not say if the $20 tethering option would be available to those who decide to keep their unlimited data for now, but MacRumors believes tethering won't be available unless you're on the 2 GB "DataPro" plan. Unfortunately, they're probably right. Update: They're right. Tethering is only available as a buy-up from the DataPro plan, and is not an option for grandfathered unlimited-plan users.
The new data plans take effect June 7.

It's been a little over four months since the initial data plans for the iPad were announced, and slightly more than a month since the 3G...

Just for grins, I tethered my Treo with PDANet to Parallels and after one 15-minute Outlook session, I managed to use 750 MG. So much for 2TB a month with tethering.

I think that says it all, and I look forward to the first lawsuits being filed.
@Catapult: "my beloved municipality just added a new $10 tax for added joy in my life"
WHAT? That sounds like an "Obama needing to prop up PBS and NPR because they are crap media outlets and cant sustain their operations without asking for more and more money from others" deal.
If it isnt, this is coming folks. Under this new regime, we're all going to get screwed one tax hike at a time.
Hmmm. As someone who has blasted Joanna D in the past, I have to say ... fair comment, with no bile ... great!
And I don't think you can call Joanna a troll because they mentioned something that is available in places other than the United States. Other unflattering terms may be appropriate (I stress "may" - I can't think of any), but not "troll", which is simply an incorrect label in this context.
If you want to call them a troll you'll have to do so on the basis of other posts they've made.
Joanna is a troll. Her link is for a provider in the UK. How is that going to help people stuck on AT&T? Newsflash: UK laws don't apply to the American public. They're two separate countries.
Why can't you jailbreak your phone and ditch AT&T? Is that process too involved for most people?
once again ATT goes for their pound of flesh. I am one of those folks that bumps into the 5Gb limit every month because when I switched to the iPhone several months ago I also discovered that if I really wanted to do anything with the phone I had to jailbreak because I HATE itunes.
When I lived in the winmo world I wasn't necessarily happy but I wasn't unhappy either because I could pretty much do as I pleased as long as I was content with a cumbersome interface. Well Apple finally got their act together with regard to MS Exchange support (hey, I live in a corporate world and this is vital) so I thought great, I can switch to a phone with a modern user interface. Well all was good until I found out about the fact that their were so many restrictions on the iphone (10 mb cap on downloads, now at 20mb but still ridiculous as the winmo phones had no such restriction), the inability to properly sync between 2 computers without having to do a binary level hack of itunes, the fact that I had to actually use itunes which is a steaming pile of crap and takes ages to sync with my phone...
Well, then I discovered jailbreaking and the joys of no download caps, no need to sync with itunes since I could download my podcasts/apps OTA (well, I still use it to get music on my phone but that happens only every month or so), etc. Well by freeing my phone I tended to use it more as a data device and hence used up my 5Gb a month (and no, I don't go over my cap and much of my intensive downloading happens late at night when I DL my podcasts so I'm not hoarding bandwidth during the day). I also use Slacker/Pandora quite a bit so that eats into my total as well.
Now people may start calling me a whiner, but ATT get their money either way. Not sure if you guys read it a while back but from an infrastructure standpoint it costs wireless carriers nothing to send text messages as it is integral to how GSM works and is basically carried along as part of the handshake to the cell tower (http://bit.ly/39LQau). Well, ATT is also getting $30/month for SMS so the way I see it I'm paying $60 for "data" transfer so don't come to me with complaints, they are getting a significant amount of money from me (last bill $208 for three phones because my beloved municipality just added a new $10 tax for added joy in my life).
Therefore, I don't see why I should have to go from $60 to $85 (2GB/$25 + 3GB/$30 + SMS/$30) with no benefit at all. It's just greed IMO and a new way to rape us on fees. Obviously I'm going to be one of those grandfathered in, but I will now be unable to make any changes in the future without getting a second screwing from ATT...oh joy
Does tethering work with the Wifi only iPad? I bought the 3G iPad, but I guess that wasn't necessary unless maybe the tethering results in a slower speed?

"Savings" with AT&T are only an illusion.
I changed jobs and had to move my iPhone plan to my name from corporate account. Ever since then I have to call AT&T every time i receive the bill, because my bill is NEVER the same. With only 20-30 wireless minutes used (out of 450), about 200-250Mb od data (out of "unlimited") and maybe 150-200 text messages (also out of unlimited) my bill fluctuates upwards anywhere from $20 to $40 EVERY MONTH!
I call, i bitch, i spend 10-15 minutes on the phone, get assured that it will not happen again and that my bill should be around $105/mo next time. just to see a $130-$150 bill next month.
That happened all 6 out of 6 months i've been on my personal plan. I just spent 20 minutes with them on a phone yesterday because of this exact issue.
My girlfriend is on Verizon with a Droid that i got her for her birthday. Her bill is exactly the same penny-to-penny, month after month after month every time i play with her phone, I like Android better and better....
I am really leaning towards switching, if not to Verizon, to an Android phone for sure. It seems to me that AT&T did not start nickel-and-diming Android users yet.
My last 4 months of data usage on my iPhone 3G have been the following:
2/2010- 2.4 GB
3/2010- 3.2 GB
4/2010- 6.4 GB
5/2010- 3.2 GB
I use slingplayer almost every day, and used it with 3G unrestrictor before it was allowed. I also use install0us, app store with 3G unrestrictor, logmein. I obviously also use safari, google maps, and mail.
The new data plans are terrible! Price gouging at it's worst. I can't believe that f you use 200mb and go over, AT&T only gives you 200mb more to use instead of upgrading you to the 2GB plan. Its disgusting that there is also no unlimited/5GB option at all, even for a higher price. $20 for tethering? Ridiculous. I will continue to jailbreak and will never downgrade my iPhone data plan to the lower caps. I will also push my data usage to the max. As someone who uses above 2gb every month, this is terrible news. My iPhone is my primary Internet connection at work, since I work for the govt and can't surf BS or personal emails on the PC at work.
I can't wait til the iPhone is released on other carriers, not because I want to switch but because I know it will force AT&T to wake up and stop with this BS. Competition is good. Competition brought us all of the wonderful features of os 3.0 and 4.0. Competition amongst carriers will be better for us, forcing AT&T to lower monthly cost. It will also relieve some of the stress on the AT&T network.
F*** AT&T!
WTF !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
