Foul Ball? MLB inserts ads into At Bat 2010 for iPad
As soon as I tapped my way into MLB At Bat for the Mariners game last night, I couldn't help but notice an ad on the splash page, and other ads on screen on the Game Day desktop. Until now this innovative iPad app had been ad free, and at U.S. $14.99 a year, that made sense. Major League Baseball isn't exactly going to the poor house, with 6.6 billion dollars in revenues last year. MLB has the right to insert ads in the app, but it seems like a small breach of faith to users. There's more. If you already had the MLB iPhone app, you pay again for the iPad version. And so it goes. A nickel here, a dime there.
We've heard this song before. Premium apps that start ad-free, and then sneak in the ads once they build up a following. Another example is the CNN app, which is $1.99, and includes ads. Some people resent paying for the ads, others don't care.
What's your take? Do the ads on At Bat bother you, or are they no big deal? Do you want the option to buy a premium app with no ads?

I absolutely disagree with moving from ad-free to ad-based in an application that is charging a subscription fee.

Have you watched MLB Network? Every last minute of every show is sponsored. They had sponsored standings. WTF?
And here - right on the main screen, along side the MLB logo they are willing to trade ad space for money.
I love baseball, the app is pretty good (not awesome), but MLB is a serious money whore.
I'm not surprised by this, but at the same time I do get offended when Im oversold to.
Yep, same game on MLB TV with ads. I'm pretty sure I bought the year long package because it was "ad free"... And now I'll be canceling it.

What's the difference?

But when ads make up about half your content, the value of your medium reaches $0.00, which is why I don't buy magazines or cable tv.
Bugs the crap out of me that if I spend $8 on a single magazine, that about 50% of the printed pages are covered in ads. Choose one revenue stream, and if that's not enough to cover your costs, find a new medium.
Ok, no one who says this is like cable, etc... is getting it. First of all the cable, public channels buy the rights to MLB to air the games. Then to recoup the money they go and sell advertisement. So trying to argue that its the same as buying cable is stupid at best.
It is a infringement to our personal freedoms, and it doesn't have to do with what country you call home or where you live. It started with the bowl games switching from the cotton bowl to frito-lay douche product in your face to pump up your member bowl.
As soon as a paid app that was ad free starts to place ads I will delete said app and make sure I rate it a one star with a bitchy comment. Believe me as soon as "we" the general public start to accept the ads in the paid for applications iAd will be everywhere you want to be.
Penis pills included...
PS. Companies that advertise using this invasive - annoying - crap will especially get my disdain.
Yeah - this really gets my goat. It's no longer buyer beware - it's now seller beware.
It is very disingenuous when someone changes an implied oral agreement without any consent from you. For example; you paid so you expected it to be add free. That is the norm for apps in the app store. You don't pay you get the adds. Sounds fairly reasonable. MLB is stupid if they think this won't stop me from never buying an upgrade or even buying anything that has their logo on it.
Forget it MLB. If I wanted commercials I wouldn't have paid for it.
Just lately I have noticed a plethora of companies reaching ever so deeply into my wallet. The service gets worse the price goes higher. I don't know what frickin world they live in. Their fanboy apologists can stick it. I am going to start canceling stuff. I can only hope some of you will do the same.
I won't stand for any ads in apps. I am willing to pay for premium content I want that is ad free and will dump any free app that introduces ads. I would feel betrayed if an ad-free app I paid for suddenly introduced ads, like changing the rules after the game has started.

When the internet becomes as commercialized as television is now, I'll stop using the internet.
