iPads help perform surgery, capture history

First up, CrunchGear points to this video of Japanese surgeons using the iPad as a display for reference during an operation. The iPad appears to show CT images and possibly a video loop as well; it's covered with a sterile plastic drape. Any translation efforts welcome -- and if other physicians are using the iPad in similar fashion, do let us know.
Second, photographer Scott Audette sent a note to let us know he was able to use the iPad, in combination with some wireless camera control tech from Canon, to manage a remotely positioned camera and capture images of the final scheduled launch of space shuttle Atlantis. The full rundown on gear and configuration is on Scott's blog, and it's quite a read.

A physician at the hospital where I work has developed six cardiovascular apps for the iPhone and one specifically for the iPad - mostly for other physicians to help predict mortality risk in specific surgeries.

"This is the Kobe University Medical Faculty (Igakubu) where they have adopted the iPad for use during surgery. (Doctors talking and pointing. Can't really hear what they're saying.) Normally, they must check the CT scan (during the operation). However, with the iPad in hand, surgery can be performed smoothly. (Orange-ish text says "Surgery becomes smooth.")
(Change to the professor of medicine interviewed.)
There is big merit in having everyone be able to look at the same screen (for confirmation or reconstruction) while doing their work."
Just note I speak japanese as a hobby, so don't go making a big deal out of this translation when someone sues you for operating on some guy using only an iPad app as reference.
Just sayin.
I've been talking to some medicos about using the iPad.
I see it as also useful in providing information to patients on conditions and drugs in an easy to handle and consume format.
Data entry, record access, policy checking, thin client access, drug and dosage references.
I reckon for medicos the iPad is really really useful
This has amazing potential to help with rounds and instant communication with doctors around the world. Sharing data easily, next is sharing pictures and videos. All those Sysco (or is it Sisco, Cisco, Cysco; whatever) commercials are right. Except
the world joined is brought to you by Apple and some hard working developers and some pretty smart people.
Use in medicine is something that has a major future!
As a medical student I carry mine on me most of the time. The ability to access all the references and online resources anytime and easy has actually led to others purchasing iPads as well!
Now the biggest problem is fighting with administration to allow access through the Citrix app to view patient data and imaging! I'm also working to make an app for patient tracking that has many differences from whats out there and focuses on reducing patient errors! Ps, any app programmers interested in helping? As a med student learning a new programming language can be a little bit time consuming!
Cheers
