"iPhone 4GS case" and parts video hit the Web

As if there could be something else we don't know about the forthcoming iPhone, website iPhone Portugal has posted video of what they claim to be the internal parts of a next-generation iPhone. Where'd it come from? Here's their CYA:

"These parts were purchased in China by one of our readers (weren't stolen or found) then delivered to us. We will not reveal the price."

The video shows, you know, mobile phone parts. So, there's what some of the next iPhone's innards might look like. We'll (probably) see one for real on the 7th (at the outside) at WWDC. But before that, let's sum up where the rumor train has brought us.

The 4GS has a new case design that probably comes in white, a likely A4 processor, front-facing camera, and a high resolution screen.

Does anyone else feel the sickening regret of an 8-year-old who has discovered all of the Christmas gifts in the attic?

I'm one person who likes a bit of mystery in my gadget launches, I like to be surprised and shocked, but with the 4G iPhone there has been none of that and it makes me a little sad. But the flip side is I know I have the ability not to read the blogs and news sites where I know 100% I'm going to see the new leaks but like a train wreck I have to stare in shock.

Who cares about the blogger named iPhone. My problem is he fact that the case is a square and doesn't look like any Apple product out there. These all seem to be early models to me.

It seems to me that these parts were stolen and sold on the black market. Any sensible journalist should be able to reach that same conclusion.

After all, I find it VERY unlikely that Apple would sell these parts, and I find it VERY likely that Apple would stipulate in its contract with partner manufacturers that all parts made under contract for Apple are property of Apple.

So although that these parts may have been purchased in China, I speculate that what was purchased is nothing other than stolen goods. I further speculate that they were stolen by factory workers. Finally, I speculate that the journalist payed far above market rates for these parts knowing that they were stolen, and that they did so in order to increase their advertising profits.

Seriously? iPhone 4GS now? It's not going to be called iPhone 4GS. First off, the "S" (in iPhone 3G S) meant it was a more speedy version of the iPhone 3G - you can't have a faster version without there being a slow version first. And it's not going to be the iPhone 4G because it's not 4G - the 3G was for 3G networks, this isn't for 4G networks. The 3G was only the second iPhone, not the third.

iPhone HD is possible, since it supposedly can record 720p video, but it's not a true "HD" screen. I think it'll either be that or simply iPhone 4, followed by iPhone 4 S to get things back on track when next year's boosted phone comes out. Strictly speaking it's not the fourth iPhone (taking the 3G S as the same as the 3G only faster) but the 3G name on the second phone was always going to be confusing, especially as iPods have ended up being known by their Generation (e.g. 3G iPod).

Not that anyone cares, but it's possible they were both stolen AND sold, which seems plausible given that they specifically mention that they won't disclose the price.

It seems Foxconn employees are a bit angry with Apple if they're beginning to hand out the parts or phones more or less wholesale...

After seeing this, I'm surprised nobody has used the term "unibody" to describe the chasis before. It seems that is the major theme of this redesign.

I actually just realized that last night myself. But those seams are so... un-Unibody. Come on Apple, you can make a laptop without seams but not a phone?

You're right! I didn't realise it at first, but this is probably the most logical and possibly the only way to bring unibody construction to the iPhone.

I remember when TUAW did the "What do you want to see in the next iPhone" series of articles, one of the things I mentioned was a unibody construction and a return to the aluminium casing. Apple dropped the aluminium casing due to signal problems, so a unibody architecture similar to the Macbook Pros wasn't an option.

This thick aluminium ring/collar is probably the next best thing and the metal plate inside most likely adds to the strength.

With regard to the seams, I'm thinking the ring/collar and midplate pull double duty as heatsinks, if this is the case (no pun intended) then the seams may be required to allow expansion/contraction.

The unibody laptops don't have seams but thats because they disipate their heat through fans and vents in the hinge, down into the bottom plate, and to a lesser extent up through the keyboard.

No. It's nice to have some idea what's coming and be able to plan accordingly. If you want magical surprises, buy a box of crackerjack.
