Murdoch reveals News Corp iPad app sales numbers at D8
Steve Jobs wasn't the only CEO on stage at the D8 conference this week -- Rupert Murdoch, CEO of News Corp, also took the stage this week, and shared some sales figures for his company's iPad news apps. The Financial Times' app is the biggest winner, with 130,000 downloads, although that number is probably so high because the app itself is free. The Guardian Photography app (not part of News Corp, but still a print publication), also free with a sponsorship, has 90,000 downloads, and the Wall Street Journal app (free to subscribers) has 10,000 downloads.Internationally, the numbers are a little lower, though the iPad only went on sale overseas last week. The Times iPad edition has only sold 5,000 copies, and The Australian's app has sold 4,500.
Murdoch is just as optimistic about Steve Jobs, though, in believing that where there are iPads, people will want material to read on them. "After all," he told the crowd, "what's an iPod without music? A high-definition television without popular shows? An e-reader without news or books?" And he's got a point, but the question will be if there are enough iPad owners out there who are willing to pay for content for print publishers to make their business profitable again.

Seriously? How is this article still here?

June 05 2010 at 11:07 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyMurdoch is the same guy that thinks Apple will sell 8 million more iPads in the next 6 months... (Most analysts say 6 million total iPads in 2010). Not sure I'd go for any numbers he throws out about the iPad. He's too bullish.

Well, the analysts have all been wrong so far.
6 million or 8 million? None of us care
Is this some kind of joke? Not only are the FT and Guardian nothing to do with News Corp, the Guardian in particular is at the other end of the political spectrum to the heinous Murdoch and the revolting rags he pollutes the planet with. What a monumental cock up.
June 04 2010 at 7:30 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplySeriously please amend this article... neither the FT or the Guardian are part of News International... The FT is owned by Pearson and the Guardian by Guardian Media Group. You have to make that distinction simply because the political views of these two papers are in far contrast to the rather heinous right-wing Fox News world view of Murdoch.
Guardian Eyewitness is free, so no wonder it's doing well - their pay app for iPhone at £2.39 is doing extremely well, having 70k downloads in it's first month after launch in December 2009. The FT is also doing well due to it being free until the end of July.
Both of these apps are in severe contrast to Murdoch's ideas of paywalls. Yes, the WSJ app is a free download, but almost all of the content is not accessible without a subscription, so I deleted it after a quick play with the app and I'm sure many others have too - even so, 10,000 downloads is quite low in comparison.
More annoying is the Times application which is £9.99 *per month*. I'm really not sure who is going to pay for that... nor the new 'Times Plus' pay-per-view website.
Murdock did have a point which publishers need to acknowledge - they can't sell you something if they have something to sell.
Point in case? The Borders bookstore app. You pay, you get a receipt and you dont get your book immediately for download (which the invoice says). You contact Support, you get a response about "issues". You don't get a refund. You don't get an update. You just wait and wonder if they'll ever sort it out.
And DRM on books sucks as badly as DRM on music did. With some many devices and different DRM formats, it's the customer who is confused and annoyed. The pirated PDFs are the simple, "friendly" option. Sure they publishers should have learnt SOMETHING from the music industry fiasco. But it appears at the moment not.
Can't wait for Apple to get their international books working. At least their payment/delivery/install system works seamlessly for the customer!

Excuse me, but my jaw is on the floor at the revelation that you appear to believe that FT and the Guardian are Murdoch papers.
It'll be quite a while before I believe a single word posted to this site. There are mistakes, and then there are mistakes which announce "I am determined to be a world-class ignoramus."
Surely the model is simple - stack 'em high, sell 'em cheap.
I have no problem spend 59p (99c) for something but cough and splutter at £9.99 ($14.99). especially as a subscription - short sharp hits has gotta be the future?
Boy, the WSJ app is under-performing. It's a beautiful app that makes for a very enjoyable reading experience.
Problem is, even though I am a WSJ subscriber, Murdoch has announced that he intends to charge an *additional* high fee for subscribers to access WSJ content on the iPad app.
No wonder people are hesitant to use it. If those charges go into effect, you can be sure I'll delete the app and use the trusty web page.
And if I'm feeling ornery enough, I'll even drop my subscription to the web edition. Money grubbing looks desperate and unappealing.
Very misleading article. Neither the Financial Times nor The Guardian are Murdoch newspapers. So, what are the figures for News Corp's app? That's what you are supposed to be writing about according to the headline.
