Apple won't support iPhone to iPad tethering

If you thought that when iPhone OS 4.0 gets released and you can buy the 2GB "Datapro" plan for $25, along with an additional $20 per month to tether your iPhone's WiFi connection to your iPad, think again. It's just not going to happen. This is consistent with Steve Jobs' answer to an email asking him about this possibility. His response was a terse "no."

According to Apple, once enabled, you will be able to tether your iPhone to a PC or Mac either via WiFi, Bluetooth, or a USB cable, but they didn't make mention of the iPad. It turns out that WiFi isn't possible on the tablet: the required Bluetooth profile isn't enabled, and using the camera connection kit to connect to a mini-USB port on your camera won't work either, although it will work with a USB keyboard and headset.

Not allowing iPhone-iPad tethering doesn't seem to be an oversight. It seems like a carefully planned decision on Apple's part to keep AT&T happy. It is very possible for Apple to make tethering work via a software update perhaps along with a new connection cable, but I really don't see that happening since it will interfere with AT&T's iPad cellular connection plan pricing while maintaining the value of charging an extra $130 for a 3G-enabled iPad.

I understand that this is a business decision and that making as much money as possible warms shareholders' hearts, but to me this premeditated decision is dirty pool and another good reason to Jailbreak your iPhone.

I think the DOJ needs to investigate Apple and AT&T for this policy as it is clearly not in the best interest of consumers. Moreover, AT&T is engaging is deception by claiming that they offer an unlimited data plan when in fact it's far from it. Another thing which needs to be investigated is the AT&T shenanigan where they forced consumers to switch from an unlimited data plan on the iPad in Aug/Sep of last year. I was one of those that was forcibly switched from the unlimited data plan to the 2GB plan. AT&T sent an email to me making a bogus claim that I had either requested the switch, or was automatically switched due to my average usage was below 2GB. I contacted AT&T repeatedly to correct this, but was given the runaround until I finally gave up.

You mention that you can use your iphone to create a wifi connection (over 3G)...how do you do this without jailbreaking or does it have to be jailbroken? I am in NZ that allows tethering but have never seen app that allowed this

I'm all for companies making money, but at what point are Apple and AT&T exploiting their customers? To me, if you're going to offer tethering via a capped data plan, there should be no restrictions on how customers consume that data. Especially if you're already charging them for the tethering!

Looks like it's definitely an apple thing and not just AT&T. Just went to the apple store here in Perth Western Aus and the dude told me no tethering :(

I guess you gotta have some reason to justify the wifi only and wifi + 3G models.

Why not buy a decent phone that has Android 2.2 on it - problem solved.

So happy I have a Nexus One. I can turn it into a mobile hotspot so I could surf the web on the WiFi anywhere :)

The reason they don't want you tethering to the iPad and using your data plan on both is because they oversell.

They know that of all their userbase, only a small amount are actually going to use up all the data included in the plan. so they tell you you're getting 2GB when they're prepared to only give probably 500MB to most.
