Apple releases iPhone 4 stats page, video
Our two word review? "It's purdy." The iPhone, the video, all of it. Apple employees are effusive, as usual, and "Retina Display" and "optical lamination" is the new "magical and revolutionary" -- leave it to Apple to make a display that's so good, our eyes can't even see all of the pixels in it.
But seriously, iPhone 4 already looks like a hit, and we haven't even actually seen the device yet. It'll be on preorder on June 15th, and out on June 24th.

I don't know, maybe Apple will release a "specs" page in addition to the "stats" page in this article's title. :/

Funny how I've never been concerned with the thickness of my iPhone, but the short battery life is an issue EVERY DAY for me. From what I can tell from other review the 40% greater talk time does not translate to other uses. Seriously I could care less about the thickness, but the overally battery life should be 200-300% what better than what the 3Gs offers.

Hopefully, they'll have a way to reserve an iPhone before visiting an Apple store even if I reserve one a few days after release, as I had quite a few fruitless visits to the store when I got my 3G.
Unrelated, but I find it interesting that Apple are making no claims that this is faster than the 3GS, not even implied.
Here's my Facetime question...
Are they separating the audio/video data streams? Does audio go over cellular and video over the Wifi? I'm overseas a lot and stuck using hotel Wifi with skype etc (unless I want to pay the high intl cell rates). Will Facetime still work if I am ONLY connected to wifi and have the cellular radio turned off?
I'm thinking that no, it won't. It must work either by using your phone number as a user ID to then link you up with the person you've called OR it sends some inaudible data down the voice channel to establish a connection. Either way, it seems to be tied to a call.
You can always use Skype or Fring. I believe Fring supports video calls at the moment, and I'd expect Skype to soon. If not, someone will bring out an app that does.
Apple FAIL. The guy video chatting with the wife and kid is seen on the bed holding the phone portrait, but the close up he is holding it landscape.
No that I really care....Can't wait for this phone.
Lots of great features! And like the new design. But what happened to the "clock" app!? Its not present on any of the iPhone 4 pics, nor mentioned on the feature-page where even the useless weather and stocks apps are briefly portrated! Sorry, but I need my alarm clock to get up in the mornings...

June 07 2010 at 5:01 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWell, I'm kinda glad the iPhone 4 was what I expected it to be. Made my pre-ordered Evo that much more of a good decision.
I really hope Apple still focuses energy in their computers now that they are a "mobile" company. It's bad enough the iPhone became stagnant and was surpassed, I don't know what I'd do with myself if Mac OSX became the same way.
"Optical lamination" seems to be fancy wording for exactly the type of treatment the original iPhone got: the screen and the front glass are fused into one inseparable assembly. On the one hand, this makes the replacement part vastly more expensive. On the other, the optical clarity is far superior. I remember when the first iPod Touch was released, how the newly-separated glass and LCD made the device look a bit cheaper, and I had hoped the iPhone would never get separate components. With the 3G, it did, but it looks like the iPhone 4 will go back to the old way. Combine this with IPS and quadruple the pixels, and I can't WAIT to see how it looks!
June 07 2010 at 4:37 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyLots of cool new features. Personally I think the video calling/front facing camera is a bit of a flop until an app comes out that lets you utilize it with a chat client. An Adium type client or even an upgrade to skype for iphone or iChat would make this even more worth while. Oh and if AT&T could also make their crappy network usable so we don't have to be on WiFi for it to work.... Did you notice Steve said they are working with "Carriers" to use it over networks? Was that a hint?

It's a hint that Apple sells globally.
