WWDC 2010: Apple announces iMovie for iPhone 4

Today at WWDC, during the keynote address, one of the things Steve dropped upon us is the new camera in iPhone 4: Yeah, the 3G S did video, but the new camera does "full HD," at a sparkly 720p and 30fps. This means that little handheld video camera that's been on my Christmas list the last three years is now gone. Why get one when my new iPhone will do it?

So you fill your phone full of video. What to do with it? If it was your Mac, you'd be flexing your iMovie muscles, wouldn't you? Now you can do the same on your iPhone: Steve showed some demos of iMovie for iPhone today, including one-click sharing, and the tap to focus that works in photos. Even the new LED flash gets in on it: You can leave it on the whole time you're shooting. Export options are 360p, 540p, and the original 720p resolution.

And of course, the app also lets you run transitions, titles, and anything else the full version of iMovie will let you do. There are even themes and theme music to choose from -- Apple's video engineer says it's the best way to edit video on a mobile device he's ever seen.

So now you can record beautiful video, edit down to the good bits, and email that video off to any of the tubes. As long as it goes through the app review process, that is -- according to Steve, "You'll be able to buy this for $4.99 ... if we approve it." Funny. When it appears on the App Store, we'll let you know.

I wonder how long this will run rendering on the A4 processor. I have a plastic MacBook and it takes about 30minutes to do 10 minutes of movie out of 30 minutes material with titles and transitions, music etc. During that time the cooler really starts panting! How is that going to perform on the a4 chip?

Will it work for 3gs iPhones? Or will it only work for 4? Would be nice if it does since they didn't say if it would or not.

Ok that sucks so does this mean we'll start to see 3gs getting pushed out this year with apps only working on 4.

Movie editing on the iPad will be good, on a phone, a little ridiculous. Also, this iMovie is the dumbed down version they've been using since dumping the useful version iMovie HD. If they really get documents working in a good way (a 4.0 feature), then 3rd party editors should be coming along, approval willing.

The main problem will be the limited memory. 32GB will fill up quickly at 720p. It's a shame there's no way to offload video onto external memory without carrying a laptop around.

As much as I love iMovie, I can't picture myself using it the iPhone I'll be getting next month... it's probably going to be a native app that I won't be able to delete.

Down-ranking myself... I forgot the $4.99 price tag on iMovie. Looks like it won't be bothering me after all.

@ TheCastro I know the iPad is going to be updated in the fall. I was asking if they were planning on releasing iMovie for iPad (either separately or as a universal app).

@Kelly —

Full HD is 1080p. iPhone 4 will only do HD @ 720p.

Still great tho!!

I can't wait to drop and shatter my 3G s like I did my 1G! Wait... would switching my SIM card to the 4G mean I'd lose my unlimited data plan?

I'm looking forward to trying not to find an excuse to gift my 3G s to someone.

I arrived late but finally read the full liveblog. The engineering design is most impressive, more than the consumer appeal. But the high-res "retina" display, 720 @ 30 frames/sec PLUS iMovie offer a compelling justification for any fence-sitters.

I'm left scratching my head over APPL's core competency. Chip design, industrial design, OS & software experience, e-tailing. WTF? Yet the company's doing consistently well.

Jordan!! Where u been, man?!? Just the other day I was wondering what happened to you. Started to get worried, but just figured you took a little vacation. Can't say we didn't miss you around here, though. Sure, we kicked around your twin Joanna for a while, even got her kicked off the message boards for a bit, but that got old quick.

So, great to have you back!

Now that you're here again, we can get back to the business of telling you to take your bitchy self and your whiny comments for a long walk off of a short pier!
