WWDC 2010: iPhone 3GS drops to $99 on June 24

Starting June 24, the price of the iPhone 3GS, which began life at $199 (for 16GB) and $299 (for 32GB) will drop to $99 for the 16GB model. Even a hardened Apple follower like myself can't help but marvel at the fact that what was once an amazing device is now sitting on my desk looking at me dejectedly.

Yes, the iPhone 3GS introduced enough power to record video, a compass, voice control and a 3-megapixel camera. But with the iPhone 4 coming soon, the price of the 3GS will drop to $99 for the 16GB model just as previous models of iPhone dropped in price when a new model came along. This appears to be the only model of 3GS that will soon be available, with the iPhone 4 available in 16GB and 32GB configurations. If you're a bargain hunter and you don't need all of the new features announced today, mark your calendar accordingly.

The iPhone 3G will no longer be sold via Apple or AT&T once the iPhone 4 launches.

Good luck finding the 16 GB iPhone for $97 at Walmart anymore. Not sure how it is in your locale but in Colorado the only Walmarts allowed to carry the iPhone are those NOT in the bigger cities that may possibly compete with AT&T or Apple stores so you have to drive all over to the outskirt Walmarts and they may not even carry them. I suggest you call them first to make sure they carry them and have them in stock.

I have also heard conflicting information about the one that will be offered for $99. On the Apple webstie and other locations it states the $99 is the 8GB but I have also read on the internet that the 16GB will be reduced. Also the person in the ATT store mentioned the same thing that the 16GB will be reduced - probably temporarily to clear out the stock is my guess.

They will more than likely either ship them back to apple or continue to sell them to existing customers as existing stock. my moneys on the firt one.

I don't get it that people not pay $100 more. Over the course of your contract you pay many times that amount...

Exactly. You have to consider cost of ownership over the two-year contract (in the US anyway), not just the purchase price of the phone.

Except if you already have an iPhone and are paying x $ per month for service then paying the subsidized price for the device changes nothing except for that subsidized fee.

The real problem is that there isno discount for buying the device outright.

It's also available as early as today, or at least tomorrow. They aren't waiting to do the price drop.

Not to pile on or anything, but it's 8GB not 16GB for the $99. It fits within their pricing tier. 8GB for 3GS...16GB for entry iPhone 4...32GB for max level iPhone 4.

With everyone pointing out the correct storage for the 3GS, I'd just like to vent my frustration that at $299 I'll still be stuck with only 32GB...
