Thoughts on the new iPhone and AT&T

iPhone 4 is a desirable and powerful update to the iPhone that we know and love, but as is always the case with Apple, there are some downers.

Off the top of my head, here's what I think is disappointing. I'm surprised 32GB is the top memory tier; I think a lot of us expected 64GB. You have been able to get that amount of memory in the iPod touch since September of 2009. Bummer.

FaceTime video chat is a great idea and everyone expected it was coming. Once again though, Apple is being held back by AT&T. To do video chat, you have to be WiFi to WiFi. How usable is that? Not very. Apple hinted that it will work over 3G, maybe next year, but we know how good AT&T is at meeting deadlines.

There are some nice features this time around for sure, including the ability to use a Bluetooth keyboard with the iPhone, multitasking, folders, and finally -- finally! -- a unified mail inbox. Better battery life is a plus, of course, and the iBook integration looks worthwhile.

So why am I not jumping up and down? First, we assumed most of this was coming. The Gizmodo leak in April dampened a lot of the excitement, and I don't think Steve was able to stir it all back up again.

Even worse, as time goes by it's very clear that AT&T continues to hold the iPhone experience hostage. From killing FaceTime on 3G, to dropped calls, to spotty reception in big cities: AT&T just isn't ready for the iPhone, and don't even think about uploading those new HD movies over the 3G network. Tethering is finally here, but much later than promised, and AT&T is working hard to kill all the unlimited data plans.

As Apple adds more and more cool functions to the iPhone, AT&T keeps holding down my enthusiasm. Not just mine: surveys reflect this again and again. People love the iPhone, but hate AT&T.

I'll get the new iPhone, but I'm still gritting my teeth.

Apple, deliver us from this bondage. Give iPhone users a choice. Sure, the iPhone is a resource hog. The growth of smartphones, and the iPhone in particular, is surely putting an unforeseen burden on AT&T. Spread it out. Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint. End the pain.

Just wondering if anyone else is thinking that the redesign of the iPhone is in order to enable touch input from the back of the phone. Just thinking that might be the only reason they are including the same glass on the back of the phone that they are putting on the front of the phone.

I don't understand why Facetime is such a big thing. It has been done before, and every regular 3G cellphone can do videocalls. I even had my first 3G phone with videocalls about 5 years ago...

I have been a long time iPhone user. I bought the first gen on launch day and also have a 3GS now. Even though I'm grandfathered in and won't be affected by this data change, I won't be buying another iPhone until AT&T is no longer exclusive.

My contract is up and I won't be getting locked into another 2 years for new hardware. I know that for most people 2GB is enough data for iPhone usage, but many people who buy a 3G iPad from now on are going to get a rude awakening.

I am seriously considering getting a HTC EVO since I live in a 4G area, use it as a MiFi and get the WiFi only iPad and say goodbye to my iPhone, I am mostly an App user anyway.

I firmly believe AT&T is not the worst cell phone company, Sprint is! I have only had one thing when AT&T dissapointed me and that's the 3G coverage cuts out a few miles out of my town but I hardly leave my town so it's not a big deal. Other then that I've had no issue with them

I still don’t get the rationale in favor for this…..those who pay for cable TV/internet I have a question for you. If a guy sits around all day and watches tv, he should pay more for cable/internet than a guy that works all day and maybe watches an hour or two at night….right? Isn’t that the same logic? I know what your gonna say…”bigger pipes”….but really I think like those who said earlier…”it’s just another revenue maker for ATT”. If 98% use less than 2GB…your blaming all the network hogging on the remaining 2%? I don’t think so.

I agree with this article on most of the points, but I'm not so convinced that AT&t is (solely) to blame for face chat being wifi only. If we look at last years announcement of tethering support in iPhone OS 3 (another data intensive feature) most if not all international carriers were willing to support it right away, and AT&T was by themselves in not supporting it. This time around it's a different story. There are no carriers (as far as I am aware) that will be supporting this feature over 3g at launch, or in the forseeable future. It sounds more like the feature just doesn't work well on any 3g connection at this point, and apple wants to do some more bandwidth saving optimizations before giving carriers the option of 3g support.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to pass on this. Partly because of AT&T. I don't want to be stuck with them for another 2 years and I can leave freely next year.
...although the most likely replacement option is Verizon and, frankly, they probably aren't ready and able to handle this better. Lack of voice+data makes me strooooongly reconsider wanting to leave AT&T. As for the other cellphone providers, they're a joke and everybody knows it.

If I was happier with the service all around, I'd probably be willing to splurge and upgrade to the newest one. But! The features in the new iPhone, while neat, aren't really as big a leap from 3G to 3GS, if you ask me. It doesn't feel that way at least. The new features don't outweigh my desire to have the option to leave AT&T for somewhere else next year, in other words.

ATT isnt bad i always have service in nyc. Sometimes even on the subway. Yeah it drops a call once in a while but its no where near as bad as people make it. I had a verizon blackberry and the service is the same in nyc!

I should point out that AT&T pays employees to post positive comments on forums like these. This was started at the time of "Apple people are making us look bad" a while back.

Just keeping it real.
