Reeder client for Google Reader now available for iPad

It's been a busy few weeks for iPad RSS clients. The Early Edition saw an update, Pulse got keynote love followed by a quick yank from/return to the App Store... it's almost as if the whole Newspad idea is starting to catch on.

Judging by our inbox volume, a lot of you are very excited about the latest entrant in the iPad reader race: Reeder, a strong favorite on the iPhone, is now shipping in an upsized version for the bigger device. The US$4.99 client syncs with Google Reader, and provides a clean and clutter-free interface to your chosen feeds or foldersful of feeds. You can easily share selected stories on Twitter or via email, save items to Instapaper or ReadItLater, mark items as unread or bookmark them on Delicious.

The app is carrying a solid five-star rating on iTunes right now, and we're looking forward to doing a fuller review soon. In the meantime, if you're looking for another strong option for feed reading, check it out.

It's too bad that the Apple-Google war makes it highly unlikely that we'll see any Google-designed iPad apps in the near future, if ever.

I downloaded Reeder for the iPhone last week by mistake, thinking it was a universal app. Fortunately it was only $2.99. I then spent the other $4.99 for the iPad-only app and love it.

This is what an RSS feeder app should be. Superb.

Now I wonder if the developer can make a decent Wordpress app.

Sorry if I'm missing something.. I love the Reeder app on iPhone and I'm just now getting used to this, but it seems like the app photo may be misleading, as I cannot get the articles to expand as stacks (as it looks in the image preview above), but instead a short list of articles?

You have to go into google.com/reader and create folders for your feeds. Once you do this you will get that nifty stack look.

Anyone know if you can mark all posts in one feed as "read" without marking all feeds in the folder as "read". It looks to me like you can't.

Reeder is great. We posted a review comparing it to the other Google Reader app alternatives, and Reeder comes out way ahead. It's my default reader app now.

The website for the application doesn't exactly inspire any confidence that they know what they are doing.

Low low low contrast makes it hard to read,.
Isn't gray text on gray background sooo five years ago played by now?

All links and navigation are camouflaged, there if almost no way to see what can be clicked or not.

And they have actually manged to use Ajax to make page loads SLOWER.
Try the site with java script turned off, its pretty fast and snappy.
Turn js on, and you have to sit and wait for every page to faaaade and sllllliiiide jerkily into place.

If that is the way the app looks and works too, then its a usability joke.

Pulse does sync back to Google. And read / unread can be seen by the darker - lighter shade of the story summary. Though you are correct - a number count of unread articles would be a welcome addition.
And a big reason for using reader apps and not the webbrowser is offline reading. I have a WiFi ipad and I would like to read my feeds on the go - impossible with the browser. So I am glad that developers are giving us lots of great apps to choose from. I am hoping a ipad version of byline is in the works as it lets you cache the rss feed and the linked webpage - necessary for when the whole article is not included in the feed.

Ok, so, say one gets a RSS reader for the iPad......how does one get it to sync to your Mac.

Right now I use Safari for RSS feeds. If I use this and Google Reader, how do I just read new RSS feeds? Is there something that syncs it all? Like in Apple Mail?

Ideas? Explanations?

My recommendation is to ditch Safari for managing RSS feeds. Since is doesn't sync with Google Reader, there really isn't that much point
In using it. Instead, use the website. You could use a single site web browser like Flock and a couple of scripts to integrate Google Reader with Growl in order to get alerts, and then you can run it as of it were a separate app. Any time you try to click on a link, it'll automatically open up in Safari. That's really the way to go.

I am just too attached to the syncing part of Google Reader across devices to use Safari's built in reader. Trying to manage RS feeds without a read/unread count is annoying to say the least.

Reeder is AWESOME. I've tried every rss app for the iPad and it's the best by a mile. Great design + intuitive buttons and swipe gestures.

All we need now is for feeds to use the apple-touch-icon. It would be gorgeous to see all my feeds displayed with full sized icons.

I bought Reeder last night, and I have to say that I love it already. Originally, I was attracted to the Instapaper integration and the iPhone app's positive reviews, but it offers a whole lot more. I especially love the Instapaper Mobilizer, which duplicates the look you get in the Instapaper app, but with the live web browser. I love being able to strip the page down and just see the article I am reading. In all, it is a very clean experience.
