iPhone eyeing top spot in Australia

Analyst group IDC has been monitoring the mobile market in Australia, as they're wont to do, and projected this week that the iPhone is poised to overtake leader Nokia.

What's more, the gap is closing quickly. From the first calendar quarter of 2009 to the same time in 2010, the iPhone's Australian marketshare rose from 10.2% to 40.3%. Needless to say, IDC analyst Mark Novosel is impressed. "Apple has soared over the past 12 months, with market share quadrupling," he told The Australian. "We are forecasting that at current growth rates, Apple could be number one in the Australian smartphone market by the end of 2010."

The most impressive number for us is the change in units shipped. For example, leader Nokia held 66.6% of the marketshare in Q1 of '09, and 45.2% in Q2 for a 7% change in units shipped. Meanwhile, Apple held 10.2% in Q1 '09 and 40.3% in Q1, '10 for a 532.1% change in units shipped.
