The Apple Store is down -- and back up. iPhone pre-orders available now!

If the tsunami of e-mail we just got is anything to go by, it appears the online Apple Store may be down. (Checking: yes, it's down.) Since the store is down overnight on a weekday, that's a pretty good indicator that it's not just down for maintenance. With iPhone 4 pre-orders set to take place sometime today, it's a fair bet the store is down while Apple prepares for the onslaught it's about to receive. We'll try to keep you updated on the store's status, but you'll have to bear with us... most of the TUAW team is asleep at the moment.

Update: The store is back up. As predicted, iPhone 4 is now available for pre-order, but only in black. The white iPhone is currently unavailable, with no indication of when it will be on sale.

Readers report that they're having trouble getting preorders through on the online store in some cases. Patience...

So Apple says that they will not be selling the iPhone 4 without a contract even if you pay the full retail price of the phone. I spoke with 3 different reps from 3 different stores.

When i mentioned that the website says a "No-commiment Phone at retail price" is available at the Apple stores, they said not for the iPhone 4.

So either the reps are lying or the website is lying.

Try going to the AT&T store in person...

After trying for a little over an hour online this morning, I went to the mall apple store - no luck there. They just had everyone going through the same online process from the display computers in the store. So I walked down to the AT&T store - an hour and a half in a short (but slow) line there, I was able to complete the pre-order process there by hand. Their systems are down and overwhelmed. But I was told I'd have mine delivered to my house on the 24th. Whew. Looks like everyone and their mother will have one of these phones on the 24th (or shortly thereafter!)

I was able to reserve one, but when i called in to 3 different Apple Store they said that the new iPhone 4 will not be available without a 2 yr contract. you either have to upgrade or sign a new contract. When i mentioned that the website says you can buy a "no-commitment iPhone for the full retail price," they said that not for the iPhone 4. You can't get the new iPhone 4 unless you sign a new 2 year contract with AT&T no matter what. Each rep at Apple said they will not be able to sell the iPhone 4 unless you are approved for an AT&T account.

So for everyone hoping to get the iPhone 4 contract free for the full price of $599 for the 16gb or $699 for the 32gb will not be able to. Especially on the first days. The reps said that they don't even know if Apple will make them available contract free anytime soon.

They did however say the iPhone 3G S was available contract free.

Ordered from AT&T on my iPhone and did a screenshot of the confirmation number and other details. It said it couldn't calculate my tax so it said I only owed the $299 for today at least. I have yet to get a confirmation email from AT&T and it doesn't pull up on the site. It's been 3.5 hours. Should I be worried?

Hey anyone who ordered from APPLE directly, how much did you pay for an 32 GB iPhone 4?

I ordered mine from ATT and they charged $68 for the tax. Called them and I've been told that the tax is for the unsubsidized price. I wonder if it's the same thing over at APPLE.

Yeah... I skipped the 3GS. I'm tired of my 3G, as I've had it for two years. It shouldn't take 5 hours (and counting) to order a damn phone. I Love my Mac, my iPod and my iPhone, and iPhone 4 looks awesome, but I just got preaproved for 2 Droid Incredibles (took about 5 minutes) with a $30 off code for each, so it looks like I'm going to the Verizon store tonight. Sorry Apple, but that's the price you pay for sticking with an inept company like AT&T

So, you're going switching because the hottest "pre-order" smartphone out is busy when it first "opens its doors"? Are you the type that would complain about standing in line for hot concert tickets during the first hours of sale? I went to an At&t store with my girlfriend. We order two 32gb iPhone 4s. The store took our information and is calling us back with confirmation numbers--why not let other people deal with the frustration?

@Rob: It's not just this, it's the dropped calls, the yearlong "lie" about tethering, the dead spots. I moved to ATT for the iPhone, I stayed for the iPhone, even though the service left me wanting to throw it across the room. I've had enough. It's more like the knee-jerk reaction was preordering the iPhone 4. Switching seems like the right thing to do. Besides, I figure in the next 24 months, Verizon will have enough LTE built out that they will bring the iPhone on board

Yeah no luck here either...got through once around 7am EDT, had a cart, but couldn't purchase. Since then I can't get past the AT&T account validation.

I can't get past the "new or existing customer?" page in the Apple store; it won't let me click the continue button.

I just placed my order for 2 upgrades (kept unlimited data) on ATT website. I kept having to go back and click upgrade, then click both phones, then click to see upgrade options. It finally went through. Having them delivered on the 24th (supposedly). Kept saying error message, and to call ATT if you don't have an iphone, lol.
