Rumor: Apple considering HD radio in future devices
Way back two or three years ago, we first heard about some HD radios coming out that would allow for iTunes tagging of songs for later purchase. I guess Apple thought that was a mighty nifty idea, as they later gave similar capability to the latest iPod nano, and the company has recently filed for a patent that integrates HD radio right into future iPhones and iPods.Unlike with traditional FM radio, HD radio transmits with it information on the song, artist and album you're listening to. The most recent iPod nano has a song tagging feature for its built-in, traditional FM receiver, though it relies on later syncing the device with iTunes to make sense of what song you tagged.
With HD radio capabilities built into an iPhone or iPod, theoretically you could set your device to search for a particular song title via HD radio information. You'd also be able to quickly tag the song for purchase and be brought immediately to the iTunes app.
With iOS 4's multi-tasking capabilities, most likely one would be able to listen to HD radio stations while performing other tasks, much like you can do now while listening to iTunes. While streaming apps like Pandora are popular and will have backgrounding capability, HD radio does one thing Pandora doesn't: it won't use up your data plan.
Of course, as with any number of the slew of patents Apple files for, there's no telling whether we'll actually see HD radio built into future devices.

What I would really like is for Apple to add a satellite radio (XM/Sirius) receiver into their iPods and iPhones. There is an app you can download to your iPod touch or iPhone, but it only has about 2/3rd of the channels and can only be used where you are in range of WiFi.
I suspect that this could dramatically increase XM/Sirius subscriptions, and Apple could easily take a good cut of the subscription fees, with their device being responsible for the increase in subscriptions.
This would allow one to get all sort of cable news channels, politics, talk and analysis, along with plenty of custom radio stations wherever one was, all on one portable device, (not adding separate satellite radio device).

Frankly, it's going to be a long long time before they slap a satellite radio tuner in... Too much space for a feature that isn't available to every purchaser.
The only real reason apple finally put an FM radio in is because of the use of it in gyms sometimes to convey class info from the instructor and such. It keeps the whole Nike+ and workout partner capacity all in the iPod.
I thought the iPod could the radio.

June 17 2010 at 8:57 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyYou can buy a little FM radio for $5 or $10, and even wear your pretty white earbuds if you really must. Why are you waiting for Apple to add it in to a new, more expensive device?
June 17 2010 at 9:26 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyNot sure how much I would use this, as Pandora and podcasts are my main form of audio listening, but I'm always a fan of options. Besides, if I lose service or something and could still get this, why not?
I'd like this as a feature for one reason: to listen to the news. There are no FM news stations in NYC, and I don't think that there are any modern devices with built-in am tuners. However 1010 WINS has a HD station. Every so often when I'm out, there's a need to listen to the news (weather, train problems, etc), so I would welcome this.
June 17 2010 at 8:13 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyHonestly, im quite surprised that HD radio is still mentioned i remember around 2006 always hearing ads about HD radio when it just came out but fast forward to 2010-and it seems like it either failed or ipods and the internet beat them. Good concept but it was too late, i would actually want Apple to unlock the FM chip in the ipod touch and iphones rather than have HD radio, come on the nano has it and the phone does not, thats a disgrace.

The AM analogue is a wreck because of iboc /HD
I recently upgraded my car stereo to one with iPod and Bluetooth connectivity, and HD Radio came along for the ride. It's OK but it's nothing special. The improvement in audio quality for FM stations is very subtle. The digital subchannels are somewhat interesting, but many of them don't have much bandwidth allocated to them and end up sounding like early 90's-era streaming audio. The digital signal seems pretty flaky and will cut out going under overpasses, or if the weather is bad, or if there are too many tall buildings around, and disappears entirely long before you're out of analog reception range. It can be very irritating in borderline conditions, where the receiver repeatedly switches back and forth between analog and digital. Mostly, it seems like an effective technology for replacing easily-ignorable analog noise and static with jarring and disconcerting digital artifacts.
too late - i'm already at 100% internet based radio for my needs, not restricted to any geographical location. And these are terrestrial stations i listen to.
->Wunderradio
WunderRadio is by far, the best app to listen radio stations from any part of the world, you got to the mention before i did.
June 17 2010 at 7:12 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyYes, all well and good, but it needs DAB consideration. The rest of the world outside the USA uses DAB not IBOC HD Radio, which does the tagging as well. I have a ZuneHD which already does the HD digital, but only in America, it's FM only for the rest of the world and therefore useless outside of the country.
June 17 2010 at 6:41 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyYou are correct that our Zune HDs already do IBOC HD Radio. The chipset that is responsible for this capability, however, is DAB compatible along with other digital broadcast compatibilities. What may be needed (aside from switching the radio settings) may be a firmware upgrade that allows the Zune to use these capabilities.

Overall, I'm not impressed with HD Radio. I've rarely used it, and that's because it barely works. As for the iTunes Tagging feature (the Zune HD does this too)... the stations (at least the ones I've run into) don't broadcast the name of the song like they were supposed to have been doing all along. HD Radio just uses the existing Radio Data Service protocol, which stations have been lazy about implementing over the past 10-15 years it has existed. It's either used or it's not. When it is, it's used wrong. And, as Jordan mentioned below, the signal is not that great. It constantly cuts out and switches you back to analog (which comes with tons of static).
Sorry, Apple, you're a little late to the HD Radio party... but you're not missing much.
