Next update to Navigon app will multitask on iOS 4
Navigation is one of the iPhone app categories that will really benefit from multitasking, and Navigon will shortly release a free update to provide that highly desired functionality. You can leave the app when a call comes in, and when you end the call you'll still be navigating. Better yet, any voice alerts will be heard while you are on a call.
The US and Canada version will be updated first, with the regional versions of the apps to follow shortly. Navigon has continued to be very aggressive in delivering features, and this latest update will be an important leap forward. No release date has been announced yet for the 1.6 update, but it's in review with Apple now.
If you'd like to see the new features in action, Navigon has posted a video of the new version in operation. I can't wait for this update, and I expect I'm not alone. TomTom has also announced it will be supporting multitasking shortly after the new OS is released.

Hopefully they release this soon, as far as I can tell, Mobile Navigator 1.5 does not work correctly on ios4.

Plus, it's 1.5 gigs, too much.

June 19 2010 at 2:50 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replyit would be better to fix big problems they have in maps instead of making the app to support multitasking.
June 19 2010 at 2:49 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThis is implemented all wrong. If I am in navigator and a call comes in, it should overlay this on top of the map, and if I accept the call, the map should be visible again while the voice should be turned off. Now, after having accepted the call, I need to double tap the home button, select Navigon, and when the map is back, switch the voice command off. This sucks.. and it's unsafe. I realize this is not Navigon's fault, but Apples, but still, I expected more.

June 19 2010 at 10:41 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI just hope it's designed as a + app that will run with larger maps on the iPad. In the meantime, I'm using something called FullForce on my iPad3G and maps have no jaggies...
June 19 2010 at 12:32 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWow, talking, listening, multi-tasking, staring at your iPhone ... all while driving. What ever could go wrong?
June 19 2010 at 12:24 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyTotally agree! Do we really need all this multi-tasking while driving? C'mon now let's just worry about getting to our destination safely without killing anybody or causing injury. I'm just sayin'.
June 19 2010 at 2:58 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replyyou dont have to stare at your phone...for instance I was driving back to school last week and i had my music playing on my Evo through DoubleTwist, have the navigation open, and my girlfriend called me to see if I wanted her to order dinner for when I got in
this multitasking kinda fails cause I was able to keep my map open while being on the phone, but there is a really simple use of multitasking without having to stare at my phone
This Navigon update will instruct you by voice while you're talking on the phone to someone else. Appearantly no one ever told Navigon it's rude to talk while other people are talking.
I'd prefer to have just the navigational display while on the phone. And, with other apps, like checking twitter, I'd prefer to have the Navigon voice instructions. But that's not very important. Having the navigational display while on the phone is but I would like to be able to turn off the voice instructions.
Besides, the person I'm talking to doesn't have to know where I'm going anyway!
