Apple sells 3 million iPads in first 80 days

The retail madness continues; Apple reported this morning that it has sold 3 million iPads in 80 days. You'll remember that the first million were sold within 28 days of the US launch, and that 2 million had found owners in "less than 60 days." Let's assume the second million sold within 31 days of the first batch. That would put the 2 million mark at 59 days.

If 2 million were sold within 59 days, the third million went out the door in 21 days, meaning the pace had actually picked up. Of course, the the international release introduced a huge new pool of potential customers, but that doesn't detract from how impressive these numbers are.

The release also cites "over 11,000 apps" built specifically for the iPad, which is up from the 8,500 mark as of WWDC 2010.

I'm really looking forward to the financial conference call that includes iPad and iPhone 4 numbers. Analysts are already revising their AAPL price targets upward.

Got mine on day 1 at my local Apple store (reserved). Love it and use it every day, throughout the day. It doesn't replace my laptop (MacBook Pro), but I use it to check Google Reader, email, Twitter and Facebook, then using my MBP for some videos (Flash) and other file-specific tasks.

3 million doesn't surprise me. And it's not just a giant iPod touch. Anyone that sees it as that really need to sit down with one for more than 5 mins.

I finally received my Dodocase (order #2949 for anyone still waiting). Wonderful product. I'm thinking of ordering another just so I have it when this one wears out.

Great now start making more of those danged official Cases and Camera kits. Them sh!ts are IMPOSSIBLE to find at any store (BB or Apple Store), and I couldn't stand to order them online and then wait 3-6 weeks for them to arrive.

Gotta plug my cases if you're not finding Apple's rubbery yech.

I prefer to hold my pad sans binder so I use suede sleeves (you can clean with them) and for rugged protection, the ultra-sleve from sfbags.com.

My father uses a multi function binder / stand from marware (www.marware.com/products/iPad/Eco-Vue-for-iPad) which is the kind of case Apple should have put their logo on. Huge attention to detail (one nitpick / hint add a bit of velcro for the tongue flap - it's solid, but 50 cents of velcro makes it better)

Of course, it's selling. It's a big iPod Touch.

I went to three Apple Stores this weekend with the intent of taking a shiny new 64 gig WIFI iPad home. There were none in stock in any size. If there were they would have sold 3,000.001 and they will when they become available.

Easiest way to get one is order online. And also, order a case and any other accessories you may want then too. It sucks to wait a few weeks, get the iPad, then realize you should've bought the accessories back then.

Probably still taking orders via reservation. Just go to the retail page for the store in your area, and put down a reserve for pickup. You'll find it in stock in a day or 2. No line, no wait, no fuss.

When a mail-ordered unit posted an arrival date past a birthday deadline, I picked one up on reserve instead no prob. When I returned the unopened model that shipped (no restock fee) to the same store, I asked them if they had one in stock - the usual sheepish reply "well no we actually don't" - I handed him the fed-ex box in my hand and told him "you do now".

....and if it wasn't for me, they would have only sold 2,999,999...

Apple leaves the competition behind again! More people will use iPads in place of their laptops for many tasks.
