iPhone 3G users face upgrade question

I think somewhere Steve Jobs has flipped a switch that's quietly detonating all iPhone 3Gs. My trusty phone had decent battery time until a couple of days ago, when suddenly I had to scramble every few hours to find a power source. With all of my funds sunk into a move to Pennsylvania in a couple of weeks, an upgrade to the iPhone 4 just isn't possible at the moment, and a good many people are also facing the "upgrade or not?" question.

If you do have to hold onto your 3G for awhile, you have to deal with a secondary issue also confronted by original iPhone users last year with iPhone OS 3 -- is it worth upgrading to iOS 4?

Steve Jobs was upfront about the fact that not all of the new features will work on the 3G, but until yesterday we weren't quite sure exactly which features beyond multitasking would work or not. Engadget has a comprehensive list of what works and what doesn't.

What you get: Utilize folders, threaded mail, playlist creation/editing in iTunes, digital zoom (just don't expect good results), iBooks including PDF support, Photos, the Game Center (once activated), updated spell check, and Spotlight search.

What doesn't work: Multitasking, fast app switching, screen lock, wallpapers and Bluetooth keyboard support. You know, the good stuff.

If you're planning to upgrade your phone shortly, it's probably not worth the hassle of upgrading your 3G. If you do plan to hang onto your phone for a little while, it might be worth it just to gain some of the features listed above. I plan to upgrade my phone to take advantage of the mail changes, iBooks and folders. To those out there with your 3G iPhones, what do you plan to do with your phone?

I too have the IOS4 jailbroken and have enabled multitasking and wallpapers and performance is still better that my previous jailbreak.

Main difference, no SBsettings and no Winterboard. Winterboard background wallpaper breaks multitasking. I only jailbreak to have the ssh access and "ability" to fully use my phone, and "MyWi".

Those to apps are the ones that cause the most performace hits on any jailbreak. so not having them on and having all the features REALLY helps performance.

I upgraded my wifes iphone 3g to ioS4 and now the keyboard does not appear when held upright but does when held horizontal, although some times you press one key and another appears on screen.
I have contacted apple but they were not interested unless with cash - they should have told us about all these issues before telling you to update???????
Any help or advise would be very much appreciated

After Upgrading to iOS4, I've found a few things that don't work anymore on my 3G!
iPhone doesn't appear in iphoto anymore so cannot sync photos!
Small feature called iPod won't play anything!
And noticed whilst writing this, text entry very slow!

So far I haven't been able to get iBook to work at all. Maybe it's not available in Canada yet?

i updated from 3.1.2 on my iphone 3G. I used redsnow 0.9.5 and unlocked it on the newest baseband with ultrasnow .93.

iOS4 is running extremely smoothly on my obsolete decrepit phone, lol. Backgrounding works wonderful. I was planning on not using wallpaper cuz some have said it slows it down, but not only does the wallpaper not slow it down, it looks wonderful too. I was also worried about what apps would be ready for 4.0 in the jailbreak community...i had nothing to fear. While MyWi DOESN'T work, PDAnet DOES. Not AS good a UI, and it is annoying to have to set up the network on the computer first, but same functionality and i'm sure MyWi will be updated soon. SBSettings works BETTER than before, in my subjective opinion, battery life seems better, phone feels snappier. For those out there who held off on jailbreaking, if you have a 3G, it is ridiculous not to. Apple said that this hardware is too old and not powerful enough, while i'm sure that it would be faster and better on the newer ones, I am MORE than happy with the performance on my 3G, and it will definitely hold me over till i get the iPhone 4. As a side note, I believe that some of the improvements i noticed may have just been a result of clearing out all the junk that builds up as you download apps and hide them, and other things like that. In general, i like to completely redo my phone once every six months for that reason. BiteSMS is almost perfect already. Overall this transition is a LOT smoother than the 2.0 to 3.0 experience.

Also, it provides a way to get around the AT&T BS about tethering and datacaps.

To sum up, Jailbreak 3G, and you may not even think of getting a new handset (hold out for iPhone 5?)

Sticking with the 3G for now...it still works, if only a little sluggish occasionally. But I'll be getting an iPhone 4 "by the end of summer" (haha who hasn't heard THAT before?) after the crazy mad rush dies down and after Apple *hopefully* finds solutions to whatever little kinks arise (not counting on AT&T to do much in the way of solving problems).

My 3G leaped out of my hands and drowned in the toilet two weeks ago. So my decision is see if I can get discounted price for 3GS or pay fullprice for 4G.

I upgraded the 3G that I have to iOS4 on Monday. So far, I can safely say that it went smoothly. I haven't had any additional battery drain on mine, and it feels a bit snappier.

I would like to upgrade to the iPhone 4, but that will probably have to wait for a few months, but hopefully sooner. I will more than likely go the RadioShack option, since they will give me credit for my old phone towards my new phone (around $100). When I take the plunge, I will let you all know how it went. :)

Here you are my first impressions after 12 hours of use of iOS 4 on an iPhone 3G (16 GB):

- I did a restore and had no real problems with installation. Even the backup didn't take so much time, as I've removed all the music, podcasts and most of the apps before syncing. I've lost those pictures that were not on iPhoto (which is normal with a restore, I guess, but iTunes *should* really prompt you, and it didn't) and got them back with a nice free app, iPhone Backup Extractor (if you've also lost your pics extract the "media" folder in the "system files" from the backup file; the app will find it on your hard-drive).

- System and apps are overall faster than with the old system (my phone became much slower after the previous update).

- New features are nice (I love folders and new Images features), and I still have lots of things to discover. I won't blame Apple for missing features (and I'm everything but a fanboy), I just don't like that they didn't add the very useful (for me) orientation control. I hope that they will add it one day, but I guess they won't.

- *Maybe* battery drains a *bit* faster. Not sure about it, time will tell. Btw I'm a heavy user. :)

- Conclusions: in my experience you should all consider upgrading, even if you're buying the iPhone 4 in a few months (I don't know when I'll be able to buy one).

Cheers!
F.

my 3g's battery is performing impressively better under 4.0.

Will give my wife this model when I upgrade in a month or so.
Thought I'd have to replace the battery for her, but now not at all.

night and day difference after the upgrade.
