iPhone 4 reviews roundup

Considering that some lucky early adopters got their new phones today and a large flood of preorders is scheduled to arrive tomorrow, it's no surprise that the embargo has fallen and the first enthusiastic reviews of the new iPhone 4 have been posted. The list and links below:

David Pogue in the New York Times...

"Now, the iPhone is no longer the undisputed king of app phones. In particular, the technically inclined may find greater flexibility and choice among its Android rivals, like the HTC Incredible and Evo. They're more complicated, and their app store not as good, but they're loaded with droolworthy features like turn-by-turn GPS instructions, speech recognition that saves you typing, removable batteries and a choice of cell networks.

If what you care about, however, is size and shape, beauty and battery life, polish and pleasure, then the iPhone 4 is calling your name."

Josh Topolsky for Engadget...

"We're not going to beat around the bush -- in our approximation, the iPhone 4 is the best smartphone on the market right now. The combination of gorgeous new hardware, that amazing display, upgraded cameras, and major improvements to the operating system make this an extremely formidable package.

Yes, there are still pain points that we want to see Apple fix, and yes, there are some amazing alternatives to the iPhone 4 out there. But when it comes to the total package -- fit and finish in both software and hardware, performance, app selection, and all of the little details that make a device like this what it is -- we think it's the cream of the current crop."

Walt Mossberg for the Wall Street Journal and All Things D...

"I've been testing the iPhone 4 for more than a week. In both hardware and software, it is a major leap over its already-excellent predecessor, the iPhone 3GS.

It has some downsides and limitations -- most important, the overwhelmed AT&T network in the U.S., which, in my tests, the new phone handled sometimes better and, unfortunately, sometimes worse than its predecessor. I'll get into that below. But, overall, Apple (AAPL) has delivered a big, well-designed update that, in my view, keeps it in the lead in the smartphone wars."

Xeni Jardin for Boing Boing...

"The fourth incarnation of Apple's iPhone is an incrementally improved, familiar device -- not a new kind of device, as was the case with the recent introduction of iPad. Yes, the notable features with iPhone 4 -- both the device and the iOS4, which came out yesterday in advance of the iPhone itself -- are mostly tweaks. But what tweaks they are: Apple's focus on improvement is as much key to the quality of its products as innovation. But there's one flaw it can't completely eliminate: the unreliable quality of calls placed over AT&T, which remains the iPhone's only U.S. carrier. ... Would I buy it? Yes."

Ed Baig in USA Today...

"The new iPhone 4 I've been testing for about a week and a half -- along with the major refresh of the mobile operating system software at the core of recent models -- demonstrates once again why Apple's handset is the one to beat, even as it faces fierce competition from phones based on Google's Android platform, among others.

...As with previous iPhones, the latest model breaks new ground. FaceTime video calling on the iPhone 4 is one of those cool "seeing is believing" features, and it arrives on top of several across-the-board enhancements. And iOS 4 is a mostly terrific software upgrade.

Cutting through the hype, Apple has given longtime diehards, and first-time iPhone owners, plenty to cheer about."

None of those reviews say anything different than I already think in my head. Of course it's a great phone, people are still jealous of the 3GS. Of course it's awesome, all of the iPhones have been. We do need a more in depth review of the phone. Not this overall, "it's cool, it's sleak, I got one for free."

Is the quirkiness I find in using iPhone apps on the iPad going to be noticeable with the new iP4? Namely, the quirks are (1) lack of a native resolution keyboard, (2) inability to rotate the app when held upside down.

Apps designed for the iPhone aren't supposed to be able to be used upside down. It's in the design guidelines from Apple.

Good reviews there :)
Are iPhone apps going to show double scaled? Is the experience going to be quirky as it is with the iPad? Are apps rotated accordingly when the iPhone is held upside down? Are there going to be new apps that can't be executed in the iPhone, 3G, and 3GS?

Is there any news on the next iPod Touch?

I am not able to get the iPhone 4G. I have the first gen iPod Touch. The first gen touch are now obsolete thanks to this update. I am also worried about getting the first gen iPads because of this same reasons (aka it being useless after 3 or so years). Does anyone know anything about the new iPod Touch features? I am hoping for a cam or even a redesign so it is more similar to the iPhone. Is it true there will be a new one in September?

Like I said I know most of you don't care about the iPod Touch, but because I have the poor man's iPod 1G I thought I'd ask if I should risk a 1G iPad or wait to see whats with the next iPod Touch?

@ Illmatic

Did you buy your ipod for what it could do or what you assumed it would be able to do in four years. You should probably wait to buy the iPad 4g.

The new iPods usually came out in early September the past couple years. I haven't read any specific rumors about the new touch so far, but I guess it is fair to assume that it will feature the same retina display and the same A4 chips as the current iPhone4. Camera has been rumored for a while .. wouldn't hold my breath.

If you are ready to spend all the bucks for an iPad, you can just as well buy a new iPhone4, doesn't cost that much more really. I wouldn't recommend an iPad yet (but then again, I am not a first generation guy), give it some time to mature. Or wait a couple month for the new touch and save some serious money.

In gadget-world, don't expect anything to last for more than 2-3 years.

Walt has also been using it for 3 weeks. Walt gets special treatment. The white phone is not available (at this time) 'in the wild'.

Bravo to those reviewers who won't stop mentioning the obvious liability created by AT&T's inferior (but more expensive than equivalent alternatives) service.

I am so anxious to get this phone. I am bummed out that I can't get one until at least the 29th now, but I guess good things come to those who wait. All I know is that I am getting one now, no matter what. I've held out for 3+ years, and now the iPhone has left me with no more excuses...It's time.

I'm in the exact situation as you. In a couple of weeks I will be looking at my Nokia e71 and asking myself "Will it blend?".
