iPhone 4 early shipments include some defective Retina displays
Which is worse: the heartbreak of knowing you're not getting an iPhone 4 by launch day, or receiving one early but slightly defective? I'm going with the latter, myself.Several folks who've received an iPhone 4 early are tipping us and reporting to Apple that the fancy, new Retina displays on their new iPhones are defective and showing odd, colored splotches near the bottom edges of the screen.
One report notes: "In the bottom 10% of the screen there are three blotches about the size of shirt buttons that discolor the screen a brown/yellow color." You can see a demonstration of that anomaly in the image to the right.
Seeing as there's quite a shortage of iPhone 4's right about now, if you're experiencing this issue and report it to Apple, it may be some time before you see a fresh, undamaged one in your hands. In fact, we're told Apple won't take tech support calls for the iPhone 4 until after its official release tomorrow.
Thanks Robert!

Not only is this story late but also, incorrect. While these problems exist, there is already a solution. Great job TUAW, keep up the great journalism.

Here is one explanation: http://tinyurl.com/2coyt88
I received my iP4 today and after activating it noticed the yellow spot on bottom right hand corner and it stretches a little bit upwards. I only caught it when I was in settings on the white background. Not sure if I will swap it out, I am trying to not let it bother me... we will see!
Info: Black 16gb

Ok. This is interesting - I had yellow splotches, one of them very noticeable. Just now my phone slipped of the arm of my sofa and landed face down on a wood floor. The splotches that were once very visible are now extremely light and almost un-noticeable. Guess we all need to start smacking our phones face down on a smooth surface :-) Hope they are still visible enough to get my replacement on Friday.

I am going to Apple tomorrow, hopefully they can do a swap for me or something.
June 23 2010 at 10:12 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyReceived my ip4 this afternoon, opened up and activated via premier customer site, connected to to itunes, and registered all within 5 minutes. Retina screen is AMAZING, it's much more than I expected.
The only drawback I have right now is the AT&T signal is much weaker for my device than my 3G is in my own house. I could use it in the basement without issue. ip4 simply has no bars or no service.
Ground level AT&T reception is 3 bars...and the design with an antenna around the entire frame was to improve reception - I'm second guessing.
Over all, this is a rockin fast phone with a design unparalleled to anything on the market.
Mine has the spots in the bottom corners, but it's such a minor discoloration that I don't mind waiting a few weeks till all the commotion at the Apple store has died down before going in to get a replacement.
