iPhone sync problems after iTunes update traced to leftover plugin
In case you are on the road to an iOS 4 update (and be careful), you might want to double check your work. Remember, first you have to update iTunes to 9.2, which will then allow you to download the iOS 4 update.After I updated iTunes, I went in to make some changes to what I had synced and take off some podcasts that I don't listen to and video I don't really watch. After making changes and clicking apply, I got this error:
"iPhone cannot be synced. A duplicate filename was specified."
A bit of searching found other people having this issue, and the clear explanation at Apple Toolbox saved the day. As it turns out, the culprit is iToner from Ambrosia Software. I used it once a long time ago, and then I deleted the application without using my handy dandy AppZapper. As a result, it left behind a little file in my iTunes Plug-ins folder that I didn't realize was there.
I removed the file, and as if by magic, everything started working again. However, if FedEx isn't lying and my iPhone actually does show up tomorrow, it was a bit silly of me to jump through all of these hoops to run iOS 4 on my 3G ... for one day.

It ain't the iPhone, it's the user. Some people have to be properly taught the correct method of holding an iPhone 4. It's like a fine woman that needs to be held tenderly in order to respond. I can imagine some of you ham-fisted barbarians holding onto the iPhone 4 like it was a can of Budweiser.

I'm with you on the "if FedEx is lying" bit. I got the wonderful "June 23rd" email from Apple (my wife didn't), but both our delivery estimates are for Thursday. It also states our iPhones departed Oakland, CA, almost 24 hours ago, and have followed the exact same course since leaving China.
Now FedEx website says shipments are moving, but the tracking updates are not being updated. Hoping my phone is here in town and on the truck as Apple's email suggested.
The Iphone 4 looks definitely uglier than the past versions but it is definitely way faster and very powerful mobile phone.

@iGO: I haven't actually done it yet, I was just trying to get everything up to date first. I will be doing it today (hopefully) after my iPhone 4 arrives and I have a working phone. I have to document the upgrade process for my day job anyway, so I am going to try to hang out until later this morning when my phone will allegedly arrive.
A couple of friends of mine with 3G iPhones say that they like it, and it isn't amazing since most of the good stuff doesn't work, but it does feel a bit snappier and looks a bit nicer.

Ah, but if it's two days, then it was all worth it.
I kid.
Just to clarify, the issue is the result of having an outdated version of our "iTonerSupport.bundle" installed in your ~/Library/iTunes/iTunes Plug-ins folder and syncing with iTunes 9.2. It has nothing to do with iOS 4. This plug-in is used by both our iToner and WireTap Studio (if ringtones were exported). You will not have the syncing problem problem if iToner is up to date, or if the plug-in is removed. We will be addressing the remaining iTunes 9.2 issue any day now. Thanks for your patience :)
June 23 2010 at 10:34 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIts not crazy, I synced my 3GS to my office computer with no music/podcasts on it and it prevented me from using the iPod altogether (would close after 3 seconds). It drove me nuts, not being able to listen to my podcast(s) on the commute to/from work.

it still synced but this error message is annoying
@Kelly,
Curious to know your feedback on how your 3G works, performance and perceived speed, under iOS4 please?
Funny you should ask. I upgraded my ipone 3Gs to IOS 4.0 a few days ago and have notice a few differences that I'm not happy wit. The biggest thing I've noticed is my battery life seems to disappear in the blink of an eye. I noticed the other night I went to bed with 100% charge, the iphone was dead in the morning. I'm not sure what's sucking up the power with this upgrade but it literally sucks :^(
