Official DC Comics app is live

dc comics appComiXology has done it again. First the Marvel Comics app was released, powered by the company's familiar engine, and then one recently for BOOM! Studios. Now DC Comics has finally released its own app, running on ComiXology's familiar interface.

So far the DC store's offerings are rather slim, especially when you take into account all of the titles the publisher handles. Most of the titles available are the more recent ones, such as Green Lantern: Rebirth and Frank Miller's Batman. One very awesome offering of note in the store: Neil Gaiman's Sandman; it's only one issue so far, but that's a much better start than zero.

ComiXology also has their own comics app and, just as the DC, Marvel and BOOM! apps are, it is free. Some of the same titles offered in the individual comics apps are available within the ComiXology app, though you can only get DC titles within their official app. [Update: ComiXology's official app was just updated with a specific DC Comics section.]

Crash, crash, crash. Was very keen to read Sandman on my iPhone but this app crashes within 15 seconds of starting up, every time. Disappointing. (3G/4.0)

I too was attracted to the idea of trying out the Sandman on my phone and suffered the same crashing bug on my iPhone 3G with IOS4.

There's a new version of the app that works now!

I do not need or want a comics app from every publisher. I would much prefer to just use a single app and get content from all the publishers in it. I predicted that we would be seeing this type of thing with eBook publishers but so far I have happily been proven wrong. The comics publisher need to cut it out already.

The big deal here is that DC is releasing some books day and date alongside their retail availability. This is a HUGE move on their part. Marvel and the other publishers are sticking to mostly archive content in their digital publications.

Downloaded it on my iPhone 3G and it keeps crashing. I can download books or enter in text. Deleted it and re-downloaded it and it still continues to crash. No sure whats going on with it. http://bit.ly/dCHDzO

This app is pretty cool but my favorite app so far this year has been the CIBC banking app. There is simply nothing easier than taking your phone with you.

Mthirty has just shared a widget with you on behalf of CIBC.

'Bout time - crossing fingers Transmetropolitan shows up soon - it'll beat handling all the books individually (DC sub-brand).

That last bit isn't true. At least not on the iPad. DC's comics are available in the Comics app; I'm reading one right now.

Yup, same here.
As far as I can tell, there's no difference between the titles offered in the DC app and those offered in the Comics app.
