iPhone 4 launch: Line photos from Charlotte, NC

Reader David Platt is waiting in line for an iPhone 4 like so many others this morning. He sent in some photos from the South Park Apple Store in Charlotte, North Carolina. David tells us that he arrived in line at 5:30 AM and found "...a little under 1,000 people in line."

Wow.

When you look at the gallery, note that the line stretches through the parking garage. David says that about 150 people were let in at a time. At least you're under cover, Charlotte! It's raining elsewhere.

Hey, I was in that line! I showed up at 6:15 and started around the Macy's building. I did get a phone at about 12 and they still had a huge stack behind the genius bar. We were in the maintenance hall way behind the store and several large FedEx deliveries went buy - more phones?
Activation went quick and I was done in less than 10 minutes. Employees said they were letting in 2 walk up people for every 10 with reservations. The reservation line was 2x as long as the walk up line but I think it went faster. The walk up line clapped and cheered any time someone got to go in the store - made it sound like they were having fun.
Chick-fil-et gave out nuggets, brownies and tea.

I got there (Charlotte) last night at about 7pm (had reservation) and it took about 2 1/2 hours. They came by within 10 minutes of me getting in line and checked my name off a reserve list, and told me they had my phone and if I waited I would get it no matter how long it took. When I got close to the non-reservation line (8:45pm), I asked and all those folks had been there since 5:30am. I was in the store at about 9:05pm and out by 9:20pm. In line Chick-Fil-A served Chicken Nuggets, Brownies, Sweet Tea, and there was some Starbucks at the front of the store, all free. Include in my driving time from Greenville, SC, I spent 5 hours getting it. About the same amount of time (maybe a little less) than I waited for the 3G on the 2nd day of its release 2 years ago.

I showed up at the apple southpark in Charlotte around 5:30am today. We made it into the mall around 8 with high hopes. That however is not working as expected. The reservation line is in fact longer than the walk-in which was cut off sometime around 8am. The problem is that the store is processing 5 phones at any given time and with plan changes, questions, etc it's taking roughly 20-30 min to process 1 customer. Process 1000 phones today? I think not. Unless you are planning to spend the night the majority of the walk-ins will not get a phone today.

At the Apple store in King of Prussia, PA, they were taking 1 non-reservation person for every 11 people with reservations. I was about 15th in line (overall - they didn't separate reservations and non-reservations until after we were in the full line) and I had to wait about an hour to get my phone.

I forgot Charlotte had an Apple Store. Haha. I can't imagine a line with 1000 people. UNREAL.

Just imagine the chaos if Apple partnered with Nascar and allowed you to have a picture of 'your favorite Nascar driver' printed on the back of the phone!

i dont know why they don't hand out tickets or something. they won't say if they have enough, but i'm sure someone can do the math. i understand they are retail people but this isn't rocket science. count the people in line, count the phones, if the number of people in line is greater than phones, tell people so they can say screw it.

Here's the line as of 8:40 in Huntington Station, NY: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jabella/4729710209/ . It was longer earlier, but now half of the people are inside. Must have been 1500+ people. Line started at 10pm last night.

I live right next to the Apple store in Charlotte. That place is always packed. I can't imagine what kind of a mad house it will be later today.
