My anticipation for a full day of iPhone 4

I'd love to give you my first impressions of the iPhone 4, but unfortunately only impression to date is how long my library is taking to synchronize. That's not new to the iPhone 4; I've been through this with previous Apple product releases. The difference today is how amazingly long it took to get my iPhone.

In the past, I've been able to scoot in and out of the mall, or have the unit delivered to my home. Today is the first time that I actually spent multiple hours in line. I ran out of battery on my 3GS. I ran out of books to read (real ones, not iBooks). On the other hand, Apple kindly catered with coffee, water, egg rolls, and pizza. "I'm so excited about today," one of the Apple employees told us. "Last night I could barely sleep."

Like that Apple staffer, I'm extremely eager to explore this new device, once my dratted sync finishes at last. On my short list of priorities:
  • I can't wait to try out using a hardware keyboard with my iPhone (either USB, via the iPad camera kit, or Bluetooth)
  • I am so looking forward to using the VGA connector to send iPhone data to a nearby monitor or TV
  • I am breathless with anticipation of seeing the Retina display in action. So far "Sync in Progress" looks amazingly crisp, but you know what I'm saying here...
  • I kind of want to test out the bad reception on kung fu grip we've all been hearing about. Right now I'm getting two bars at home, where normally I get full bars -- so I'm not all that sure that the 4 represents an improvement for me on coverage.
  • At the suggestion of my colleagues, I'm eager to benchmark some of my favorite apps (and some of my own apps) to see how they perform versus the 3GS and the iPod touch.
  • And, finally I can't wait to test iMovie for the iPhone 4 and FaceTime. These both sound like awesome fun -- and I hope they live up to the hype.
We'll all have more to say about the iPhone 4 over the next few days, but those are the things that I am most looking forward to spending time on.

Similar lines at Apple Store in Scottsdale. At 11am line for reserved was over 100, just like the temperature. So I said "screw it", came back at 4pm, the reserved line was two people (and temp of 112), waited under five minutes. If the line had still been long, I'd have gone home, gave up my reserved phone, and came back in August, so I could walk right in and buy it without any lines. No way in hell am I standing in line for hours outside in 100+ heat.

Ok I don't know if some of the phones people have gotten are cursed or what, but I haven't had any bars dropping from holding the phone, in fact, my reception and Bluetooth reception ar twice as good than before. No issues here, however...the line thing did suck but hey it adds to the hype! Love my new phone....till next year of course! Haha

Why wait until your sync is done? If you're that anxious, just plug in and do a restore (took about 8 minutes for me), then cancel the sync and play around with it. Then when you're done, do the full blown sync at night.

The queues at Regent Street were awful. The communication was even worse though! Apple employees would tell nobody anything about how long it would take. You got to the front of the queue outside, only to find another 2.5 hour queue inside! Which nobody thought to tell anyone.
The problem seemed to be that they had no quick tills as such, for people who didn't want instore activation etc. But just wanted to hand over their card, put the pin in, and leave with their iPhone. Should be a 2 minute job! Complete shambles.
Althought Starbucks and Pret did hand out lots of free food and drinks. And I nicked an Apple umbrella just to spite them...

I got in unreserved line at Cherry Creek Mall in Denver at about 8:40. I was out with a new iPhone 4 by 9:15, and the mall had closed at 9. The store still had at least five or ten units sitting behind the Genius Bar, and who knows if they had any in the back.

I was in line from 7:30am until 5:30pm. 10 freaking hours! Worse experience of my life. I even had it reserved. Once I actually got into the store, I had my phone in 5 minutes. Come on Apple there has to be a better way to sell a phone.

I like many hundreds of others spent hours and hours in line today at the mall in Pleasanton, CA (a San Francisco East Bay City). The Apple store opened at 7:00 am and I spent NINE hours in line to get my phone, which took less than ten minutes to purchase, authorize and transfer my contacts from my old phone. When I left there were still several hundred people in line "with reservations".

What's the difference if I sell my soul to Apple or Google?

Steve doesn't care, we buy his shiney new toys and he tells us to deal with it.

I arrived at the mall at 6:20 and was buying my iPhone 4 at 6:30pm. The reserved line was like 8 people, but within minutes I had mine, and the retail specialist and I were just waiting for the ATT server magic (ha!) Total experience was maybe 1/2 hour.

The other (unreserved) line though. I felt bad for them. It was still crazy long,

Set up was easy syncing was fast, and I'm left handed but I have been able to reproduce the dropping bars issue.

Karmically, I expect to get shot for my iPhone4 tomorrow.

I've had my iPhone 4 for two days now. There are many many improvements over the 3GS; however, in my observation so far, the reception is worse than with older iPhones. I have a MicroCell in my home office, and the iPhone 4 can't stay connected...the ""M-Cell" Icon comes and goes every couple of minutes. I understand there is a price to be paid for being one of the first to get these, and expect an update on iOS to fix this, soon.
At the end of the day, even more than the 3GS, it's less of a phone and more of a tiny computer. Unless this gets fixed fast, I may have to take my cell phone business elsewhere. Between AT&T's crappy coverage here, and the apparent antenna issues, it's barely a functional phone.
