Topping the App Store charts with Angry Birds

Angry Birds is one of the growing number of phenomenal success stories coming out of the App Store. It's a simple game; you drag birds in a slingshot in order to try and get them to knock down structures and hit green pigs. It's really resonated with audiences, though, and just like we heard with Doodle Jump, a string of constant free updates has propelled it to the top of the charts.

I got to talk to Mikael and Niklas Hed, cousins and chief officers at Rovio Mobile (the company behind Angry Birds), last week at E3 about their game and its success so far. They told me that the game has had four million downloads to date across, both, its paid and lite versions, and they said that they'll keep updating it "as long as the underlying market keeps growing." I asked them why they have chosen this model of just supporting the game with free updates, and they pointed to Valve's Team Fortress 2 as an example; they're updating the game just because they're "focused on bringing great value" to their customers.

Future updates to the game will include new birds to play around with and a little bit of multiplayer functionality, which is coming in a "huge update" very soon. I also asked about the iPad version (which has gotten some bad reviews, since it's basically the same as the iPhone version), and they said that it was just a matter of resources, but they did want to update that version of the app in the future.

At this point, it sounds like the Heds are still a little overwhelmed; they've gotten a ton of success already, and even they say that they've agreed to "some kind of obligation" with fans by providing these free updates. That's not to say that the game's not worth the attention, but that, especially with the iPad version, they may have overextended themselves with promises to their growing legion of fans. However, they clearly know the challenges ahead, and their solid success is a great foundation to anything else the company wants to do.

Angry Birds is easily the best dollar I've spent on an app so far. Both my wife and I are hopelessly addicted to it, and everyone I've let play it has purchased it for themselves (at least those who have iPhones did). I've beaten every level; now I'm trying to get three stars across the board (I'm close), and uncover the rest of the golden egg levels.

It's a case study in casual game design. It's simple, easy to learn, gets steadily harder, and makes you feel like a bad ass when you figure it out. Sure, there's no real depth, and the physics can be a bit wonky, but who cares when you're having so much fun?

Overall, brilliant.

Did anyone else find this sentence distractingly awkward? Remember, commas indicate a slight pause. Try reading that sentence while pausing at every comma, you'll come out sounding like Christopher Walken. There are also a number of run on sentences here. You're a bit too liberal with the the commas. I know a lot of people will think I'm complaining about nothing, but readability standards is one reason I follow real news blogs, and tend to avoid personal ones.

It's a quality app, but do try the demo first. I bought it, but don't find it that exciting.

A great game, funny, fun, but frustrating. Absolutely despise those disgusting snorting grunting giggling piggies, nearly threw the iPad out the window because of them.

I haven't gotten this game since I already bought Crush The Castle (of which Angry Birds is a clone...with many tweaks). Admittedly, it looks like these guys did a much better job than the original CtC (CtC is just a flash port basically).

I can't stop playing this game. I'm obsessed with getting 3-stars on every level. They just released another free set of levels... all for less than a dollar. What more could you ask for?

Greatest game ever created for iOS. The free updates are amazing and what make this game an absolute steal for 99 cents.

Yeah it's not deep, but it's fun. And there is a *ton* of content for a buck. And it's funny. And overall the engine is good (definitely some physics-defying going on sometimes.) The sounds are particularly entertaining. Especially the woodpecker. Heh.

This game is great fun, in a very Lemmings sort of way!

I picked it up for a buck yesterday, along with games on sale for the same price from Gameloft and EA Mobile. Given all the hype, I anticipated a way deeper experience than I got, but it's a good train timewaster.

how far have you gotten.. some of the later levels are quite challenging.

already had the iphone version so i didn't bother with the ipad version. I hear the biggest gripes are from the folks who thought the ipad game was different some how, and feel "ripped off"..

It's a fun game along with CTC (crush the castle), and implode (use fixed number of bombs to demolish buildings)

I'm not too far. My wife is mysteriously addicted to it, though... the fastest she has actually paid attention to me and played a game since we got our phones (it took her months to install Bejeweled 2 and Plants Vs Zombies).
