Apple releases iPhone user guide for iOS 4

Apple has released the iPhone user guide for iOS 4 software. It's a 17MB, 244 page PDF designed to walk you through everything from syncing to using the default apps. The 28 chapters cover the Phone, Mail, Safari, iPod, Messages (SMS/MMS), Calendar, Photos, Camera, YouTube, Stocks, Maps, Weather, Voice Memos, Notes, Clock, Calculator, Settings, the iTunes Store, Compass, Contacts, Nike + iPod, iBooks, and Accessibility ... whew.

The book includes tips specific to the iPhone 4, but it also includes tips for the 3GS and 3G. When a section of the manual is only applicable to a certain device, it is noted at the beginning of the section.

As usual, the iPhone iOS 4 user guide is well-done. If you've been using an iPhone for any length of time, you've probably figured out most of this stuff already. It's a good resource for new users, though. There is a whole section of Apple manuals for various devices including the iPod and iPad.

After installing the iOS4 on my iPod Touch (itbonly took 4 hours!), the first thing I noticed was the wi-fi reception strength icon showed decreased and inconsistent signal strength. With my iPod right next to the wireless router, it showed only one bar signal strength. It's varying betweek one and three bars. Is this a 'feature' of the new OS?

Does anyone else think it's ironic that there are spelling mistakes in the "Spellchecking" section?

"... To leave the word unchangd, tap someplace else in the message area..."

:D

Just got the iPhone4. Right now when I click on settings the screen is frozen, won't scroll up or down. Any help from the field from a non-techie person?

Hold down the Home button and the Power button simultaneously for awhile. If you don't get the OFF slider then just keep holding down the buttons and the phone will force a reboot.

Does it talk anywhere in there about how iOS 4 absolutely BLOWS on the 3G hardware? My phone is extremely frustrating after updating... music skips while playing if I try to do anything else (like sending texts), the unlock swipe moves 4-5 seconds after I swipe, and just a general lack of flow.

@TJ -

You guys/gals are very sharp so I thought I might have been overlooking something when I noticed such an obvious conflict (ie; iOS4 is tied to the iPhone 4, even the image in the manual).

Good point on me reading the article a little closer...I hope to be able to.

if you haven't synced/erased your new bookmarks, they have a link in mobile safari that brings up a nice mobile version of this...

Remind me why you're posting a picture of the 3GS when talking about the iPhone 4?? I love you guys, just giving you a hard time...

I selected the image of the 3GS to specifically draw attention to the fact that the manual is about iOS 4 *not specifically iPhone 4* as I mentioned when I wrote: "The book includes tips specific to the iPhone 4, but it also includes tips for the 3GS and 3G."

Good try, though, although next time you may want to read the article before leaving a comment :-)

Does it contain instructions on how to hold your phone?

"The following figures illustrate safe phone holding techniques."
