TUAW's Daily App: Twitterrific (and others!)

Ok, so we're kind of cheating with this one; you probably already know about Twitterrific, if you don't actually have it installed on your iPhone. But we're using our daily app spotlight today to point out that the folks at Iconfactory have released version 3.0 of the popular Twitter client. Along with making the app universal (which means it now works on both iPhone and iPad), they've updated the interface and code for iOS 4. That means that it's not only purdier, but it's faster and works with in-app switching as well. Twitterrific is a free app, with a US$4.99 in-app purchase to remove the ads and manage more Twitter accounts.

That's not enough? Alright, we'll throw in a few more upgrades. Smule's popular I Am T-Pain app has also upgraded for iOS 4, making it not only ready for the Retina Display but also adding the ability to share auto-tuned videos on a few popular social networks. That one's on sale for only 99 cents right now, too.

Finally, ngmoco has released Eliminate: GunRange, an iOS 4-specific app that makes use of both the gyroscope and the premium Retina Display in the new iPhone. It's just 99 cents, too. While it's just a shooting gallery, it'll be a nice demonstration of the new hardware's capabilities if you're into the firearm range thing. So, there you go -- three brand new apps to fire up on your new iPhone 4.

It feels like this new version is a couple of step backwards from the old version. Some things are nicer. But it's generally a lot more clicks to do the same thing as in the old version. And it's missing some nice features like adding @-usernames when you're writing a tweet. Or adding map location. Updating your twitter location. For example.

OK, I figured it out. V3 is a separate app from V2 and they can coexist. You have to enter your account details again in V3. All is well here now.

I'd like to upgrade to the next version of Twitterrific, but it seems that I'll get a one-account version first and when I pay it'll be able to handle multiple accounts. So will my account settings be hosed and will I have to configure all my accounts anew? Anyone know?

And I do have to say... I don't like the new interface. I kept using Twitteriffic after the official Twitter app came out because I preferred the way it handled things (clickable links in the timeline). Now it just opens the tweet when you click on it right away. At this rate, I might as well use the official app.

Is there even a full settings screen like there was in the old verison of Twitteriffic? I can't seem to find it.

I guess I'll be sticking with 2.1.6 Pro until they bring 3.x up to the same feature level (and then some).

I was waiting for this update. Twitteriffic used to be my favourite twitter app. I really like the way twitterrrific uses different collors for mentions, DM's etc.
But this update is a bit of a dissapointment for me. Apps like the official twitter app and (my current fav) Echofon are much more advanced.
It looks like features were left out instead of new features added.
And you used to be able to click on linksdirectly in the time line, not anymore. There's no synching with their desktop app (big plus for echofon)
I could go on and on, bit of a bummer this update :(

I gave up on Twitteriffic even though I'd paid for it. Have switched to Osfoora now.

I'm kinda disappointed that Twitterrific 3.0 does not allow font size changes. That seems like a fundamental oversight. The iPhone4's crisp screen is much easier to read, and having a smaller font option would let me see more tweets on the page at a time. :( ... so I downloaded the official Twitter client and have been using it more and more.

so wait ...what? I purchased the Pro version of Twitterrific a while back ...and now they want me to re-purchase it now as an in-app upgrade? Seriously?

You won't be billed - it treats it like a re-download.
