Apperang pays users for app installs

The App Store is a busy place -- there are lots and lots of apps out there, and almost all of them need attention. Some developers are apparently willing to pay for that attention, so enter Apperang, a new service that purports to pay users to install certain apps on their iPhones. MobileCrunch has the breakdown -- Apperang has a verification system running that will check if you've installed apps in their system (including Booyah's MyTown and Flixter's Movies -- I saw nine apps on the service, but that may be limited by location), and then will pay out a few cents, both for installing the app yourself, as well as referring it to other Apperang users.

Is it kosher? Pretty much -- lots of app developers already pay for advertising that's targeted towards app installation, and this deal isn't any different. Rather than pocketing all the profit, Apperang is just passing it on. A video on the site shows that Apperang is promising US$.25 per app install (if the app isn't free, they'll reimburse you the purchase price), and their FAQ says that the minimum payout is $1. Payout appears to work through Paypal -- that's the only option I can see so far. For some companies, it's just easier to pay a quarter for a new user rather than gamble on advertising or word-of-mouth.

I do question how scalable it is from Apperang's perspective, and of course, as a user, there are much better ways to make some pocket change

Actually this is just the same as buying iAds or AdMob ads to boost your app sales only the difference is that rather than the money going to the owner of the app showing your ads it goes into the pocket of the downloader.

You lose money from the advertising in the hopes of gaining a higher rank in the app store and ultimately profiting -- just like if you were buying downloads through ads.

If this is "gaming the app store" then so is buying any other advertising.

How many people ultimately go for this is the question.. I don't think too many people are going to care about the pennies they could receive.. this is much like those sites that offer to pay you to click banner ads.

Apperang is pretty neat but there are better services out there. AppLifter.com is a similar service but has way more apps to choose from.

This is actually a way to game the iTunes app store by giving a certain app sales like this, it gets the app ranked in the Tops list. This of course gets more sales for the app developer but is strictly against the Apple Developer agreement. App developers pay these sites to do this, which is where they get the money, but if caught, will result in total removal from the iTunes store.

This works great for me. I agree that it is going to mess with iTunes ranking system but that's really a silly way to pick what apps you want to buy anyway.

This is no different than EA dropping all their $10 games to 99 cents and jumping to the top of the rankings.

I'm glad there are sites like this that can show me apps I wouldn't have been able to find otherwise.

WeReward gained a new customer today when I joined and listed my business on their website to be included in the app.

Other developers will win when I show their apps to friends, of course some apps might be deleted by tomorrow but you never know!

This is a win for everyone except those developers who rely entirely on the iTunes ranking to gain new customers.

I added all 9 apps and have raked in $2.25 today in profit. I hope 9 more show up tomorrow!!

I installed 4 of the free apps yesterday and have used them all. So far only one has been verified after many syncs and quitting of iTunes.

Not worth the effort or time IMO.

I think it IS very much kosher, the only party losing out is other means of advertising (let me shed some tears): users win (free apps and pocket change), Apple wins (30%), developers win (genuinely useful marketing money spent).

Sorry, Mate! There are no apps available right now. No worries. You can still earn by referring your mates to Apperang.

I had the pending issue as well. I closed iTunes and reopened it and the Verify worked! Money Money Money! I can see why this is a big deal for both developers and consumers.

I also checked out Slacker Radio through apperang.com and I like it. Worked for me and Slacker in that case.

Ok well I for one hope that Apple puts a stop to this. Or, if they don't, I will totally take advantage of it.

This is pretty much cheating the ranking system. I put out an app, say call it Notris for $.99. Then I pay $55000 for 10,000 downloads. $2500 for the 25ct, and 30% of the price that Apple keeps. Then I am top of the paid ranking, get way more people to buy this, and gradually increase the price. Easy money.

Now others maybe have to catch up with me, and also use Apperang. In the end Apperang profits, users and app devs lose.

Apple can end this instantly by just removing any Apperang apps from the rankings. Then there's no reason for this app to be around, and it can go away.

PS: Dammit somebody already made a Tetris clone called Notris. I'll have to think of another name. :P

I meant to say $5,500. Is there an edit button? Duh!

I couldn't agree more. This is NOT kosher, it IS cheating the ranking system, and TUAW should NOT be promoting it.
