Reports: Issues with iPhone 4 and car stereos
We've received several tips over the weekend from iOS 4 users who are having trouble connecting to their car stereos. A search of Apple's discussion boards revealed that they're not alone. Here's what's going on: A number of stereo units from Pioneer, JVC and others are giving a "device incompatible" message when connected to an iPhone running iOS 4. Note that the 3G and 3GS phones in question worked fine with these stereos when they were on iOS 3.1.3. Of course, the iPhone 4 only runs iOS 4, but since the older phones are also affected it seems likely that this is a software issue, not a hardware one.
Others aren't getting the incompatibility message, but are seeing weird behavior. For example, everything works fine until a call comes in and then finishes. The song that was playing at the time starts over from the beginning, instead of picking up where it left off. Others report that the iPod app will play music for about 10 seconds and then go silent, even though it says music is still playing.
The issue is spread across manufacturers, so it's reasonable to point the finger at iOS 4 (unless all these stereo makers missed the same fine print in the iPhone compatibility specifications). If you've had the same trouble -- or better yet, found a fix -- let us know. Here's hoping a future update takes care of the issue.

My Sony stereo, that I just had installed in my car, does not work with the newest iphone software. I get an 'incompatible' error message. I have an iphone 3G S.
August 26 2010 at 7:06 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyTo be honest I'm appalled at how lazy manufacturers are at implementing an iPhone / iPod solution. I got my Alpine head unit a month or two ago and the car kit part is worse than my old Nokia CK300 and the iPhone integration very poor. Sometimes with my 3GS it can't find the iPhone, sometimes it will not return to the music after a call. The interface is out of date and clunky.
Worse still I got an iPhone 4 and it refused to work properly with my CDE-113BT unit. The incompatability message kept on popping up making the unit useless. In the end I returned the iPhone 4 as my 3GS seems to work better with it.
If you step into a new Audi THAT is how to do bluetooth / iPhone integration - it's brilliant.
Hi I ace no problem with my 3GS upgraded to iOS 4 plugged into the Kenwood KDC-W5534U..
But for the iPhone 4.. When I plugged in, the kenwood kept seeking and erased my entire iPhone music library!!
The only thing I can do to make it plqy and not erase is start playing music on iPhone 4 and then plug into the kenwood iPhone plug to play.. Very annoying but works.. I wonder if it will damage my iPhone 4.. Heck I need the iTunes musics when I drive in traffic man!!
Darn
hi.
great to know im not alone,
i have an iphone 3GS which worked perfectly with my ipod connect Pioneer Head unit in my car, but since i downloaded the IOS4 - it will play a song, but as soon as i try to skip to the next song, the stereo either comes up with Error19 or the stereo screen just goes blank and doesnt play until it is unplugged and re-connected again..
anyone have an fix? if not - how do i backdate to the iOS 3.1.3 software again?
thanks,
justin
After I updated my ipod touch with i0S4 my Pioneer FHP800 didn't recognize the it after I had synced it with my computer. If I shut the ipod down and then turned it on again, then the stereo recognized it again.
I'm having the same problem with my new iphone 4g.
Has anyone heard any news of an update for the i0S4?
Hi
I got an jvc car audio and when i plug in the iphone the song plays in 2 sec and then silence, it sucks!
My iphone 4g will not pair correctly with my Pioneer FHP800 BT for bluetooth audio streaming. I checked out an Apple forum and a lot of people are having the same problem after updating to the new iOS4. It's possible to pair, but you need to start from scratch each time you start the car and that's about a 5 minute process.
Contact apple about your problems and maybe they'll do something about it.

I think the issue is much more widespread than this thread suggests. I just spent much of the day at my local Best Buy, to find a car stereo that I could plug my iPhone4G into, via USB. The end result is: NONE of the in-stock stereos supported my iPhone. Issues went from 'device not recognized' and 'error' to identifying the iPhone but not seeing any of the .mp3's ie: 'playing 0 of 0'. This was across all the stocked stereo manufacturers (JVC, Alpine, Pioneer, Sony, etc.).
No idea what my next step is. Not very excited about plugging in via audio cable at end, and a charging cable from the other.
I have an '09 Infiniti G37 convertible. My iPod Touch 8G (1st gen) has worked perfectly with the built-in head unit via USB (well, their proprietary USB cable). My iPhone 3GS 32GB (iOS 3.1.x) was always kind of flaky, especially when scrolling through the list of songs / albums, it would constantly "lose" the connection and reset. I upgraded to iOS4 on the weekend, and now a couple of audiobooks that used to work, are not working now.
I'll have to do a more comprehensive test now after reading this!

Funny, I had the same issue with my 3Gs after the first update. My Pioneer car stereo with Blutooth would have a problem every 45 - 60 seconds. Checked the Apple forums and there were plenty of folks with the same issue. I've update and checked every time since and wouldn't you know it after iOS4 update everything is working perfectly. I'm happy no but not sure how long it will last.
I can see this issue getting much bigger in the future with the number of hardware manufacures buiding integration to now iOS4.
One would think the certified to work with iPhone should stand for something you can feel comfortable about, especially if there is no way to go back from and update.
