Is your iPhone 4 exhibiting proximity sensor issues?

Users are reporting buttons being hit as well, which is even worse if you use your iPhone for, you know, a phone. I'm hoping the next OS update will fix it, but in the meantime, let us know in the poll below if your iPhone 4 isn't registering the side of your face during a call.

I happened by a mirror while talking on the iPhone 4 last night and saw my screen lighting up, turning off and lighting up again...

I think everybody should have a look at this post that was deleted from the Apple support forums by Apple. It seems that they have no interest in fixing this issue or even making a statement on it unless they are forced to by a lawsuit or something to that effect. I am VERY disappointed in Apple. I have been a fan for over 15 years. It seems as if they have forgotten who they are and just becoming a big bully now. (see below)

I told him there are nearly 70 pages on the Apple Support forum for this exact issue. He immediately dismissed my comment and said, "We typically don't lend too much credence to support forum posts..." Ok....

He gave the phone back to me and said, "There doesn't appear to be any issues with your phone. You'll just have to get used to the new Proximity Sensor location on the iPhone 4..." I was like, "Ummm... Huh?" He refused to exchange the phone.

I immediately went back to Best Buy and the Mobile Phone sales guy said they've already had 9 of their 30 launch day iPhones returned due to antenna and proximity sensor issues. He put me on a list to exchange the phone. Luckily, I have 45 days to exchange the phone, since I'm a Best Buy silver rewards card holder...

Wow just cause of this attitude of apple employees They are being SUED by lawyers well apple you should take this time and save yourself from another class action law suit for proximity sensors
PS ~ Apple mods now don't be wasting your time deleting this post since I have a right to say stuff when you guys sell us your defective product and I think if apple doesn't address this issue then we all should return the Iphone 4 at lease those who are having this proximity issues.
And also apple instead of deleting peoples post how about investigating why Iphone 4 proximity sensor is going haywire and maybe you will save yourself from another law suit and also people who are having problem with there iphone 4 with the proximity sensor do report it to KCR LEGAL LAW FIRM

I am having the issue as well. Please see my video above.
This workaround is working so well for me I just wanted to repost it with additions.

I think I may have found a temporary solution to our problem while we wait for a real fix from Apple.
Once you start a call, hit the home button and pull something else up on the screen like a photo so that if the screen comes back on it doesn't have options like END CALL or FACE TIME on the screen to accidentally hit. The calculator may be another good choice as the only way to get it off the screen is to hit the home button.
Just wanted to add to this. >>As soon as you initiate a call you can double click the home button to bring up recent items and then just hit the photos or whatever you were using as a quick shortcut. It will take you right back to whatever the last photo you had up and you can go to your call.
You can also use the double click on the home button while you are on the call in the photo app to view recents and then toggle between the phone app and the photo app if you need to get back to the call screen.
We definitely shouldn't have to do this but for people that absolutely need their phone without headphones etc.. this was a great suggestion!
This is working for me so far at least as a work around.
thanks djkidkaz!
I tried to demonstrate the problem in this short video...put together fast.

I had the same prob. Called Apple and they said they are aware of the problem.
They set me up an appointment for the next day to get it replaced. Was really worried as the problem was intermitent and I did want to go into the store and not be able to show them or recreate the issue. So I opted to call support first and the tech said they were aware of the issue and had a replacement waiting for me at any of the 3 apple stores in my area. So in short...def annoying problem but I like that Apple, as always, is taking care of my issues quickly.
My 32GB doesn't have this issue (SN; 86023...) but a friends 16GB (SN: 87024...) does.
July 01 2010 at 7:36 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI have been having the same issues since the 23rd when I received the phone. I hope Apple can do something about it ASAP as it has become quite annoying. I have dialed people on three way, turned facetime on numerous times, noticed while on the phone that it would be on and on some random contact, etc...
I find myself compensating by holding the phone differently so I am always in contact with the sensor. Using the iPhone 4 thus far is not nearly as much of an organic experience as the 3GS was. I am certain Apple will come up with a reasonable solution however.
EVERY CALL! Thats right EVERY CALL there is a proximity or dropped call issue. Enough complaining WHERE IS THE FIX?

So, is it hardware or software?
It's acting as buggy as the rain sensor on my car, but at least I can switch that junk off.
I'm starting to think that this was an issue with glue that needed to cure. Mine seems to be getting much better.
