AT&T says New York City service is improved
While AT&T's service has been notoriously bad even before the iPhone launch, iPhone users in New York City have suffered some of the worst of it, with one Apple Genius reportedly saying that 30% dropped call rate was average. (I think he misspelled "atrocious.") The good news is that AT&T has rolled out a network upgrade in the NYC, according to the company's press release this week. The big question was: Will it actually help?
Early anecdotal reports are that yes, it has made a big difference. I've seen various snippets around the web of people posting that things seem to be better. I guess only time will tell for sure.
This also seems like a good time to remind you about AT&T's free Mark The Spot app for noting when you have either a voice or data issue. We've noted that some users are getting updated with news of tower build-outs near their reported dead spots. Personally I wondered if this was leveraging towers AT&T planned to install anyway, but I spoke with a friend who works for AT&T and he said "I know it's hard to believe, but it really does matter."
What say you, NYC folks? Has the upgrade been noticeable for you?

I really want to get an Iphone4 but i'm reading these comments and maybe I shouldn't. I live in Rockland County, NY and I know one person with an Iphone4 and he always picks up when I call. Even in an elevator in the city where he works at I was able to talk to him on his Iphone4. So is AT&T service that bad in the NYC area? I have Verizon and I love it but I really want an Iphone4.

They charged me for unplugging wires and really stupid crap. When UVerse came out I tried to upgrade. I set up 5 appointments and they NEVER showed. Also, I had to disconnect my DSL and they left me without email for at least 5 weeks. I filed a complaint with the state and they finally got the message, but their service wasnt good. I also tried ATT cell service and it didnt work in the rural areas. Verizon is so much better where I live and I will never give ATT a chance again.

July 06 2010 at 2:22 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIve had AT&T for the past 4 years i live in daytona beach and had a problem here and their with signal in the house. My local AT&T store told me that i need to go to the spot in the house where my bars drop and turn the phone off pull the sim card out wait 2 min put it back in and turn the phone back on and it will be fine. i did this in the 2 spots in the house and no problem ever since. so if you know where you loose signal at with your phone turn it off pull the sim card out and put it back in and turn the phone back on and you will be ok fyi this does not work in mountains. i can go back to my home town in ohio which is in the middle of nowhere litteraly and i have always had full bars and great reception.

We've found very few service problems while in the city, though we're usually in Mid-town and the village. We've always been able to use our phones everywhere, even in our hotel. I will be curious to see how the new iPhone 4 works there.
July 06 2010 at 1:44 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI've been with this company before it became AT&T,I must admit my service was much better back then. AT&T needs to make overall improvement for their costomers. When my contract is ended I thinking of another wireless provider.
July 06 2010 at 1:35 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIt's not just the i-phone and not just in NY. It's been going on for a few weeks. Been dropping calls like crazy. All our AT&T phones. I-Phone and Blackberry.
July 06 2010 at 1:21 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyNew York's not the only place with a problem. I quit AT&T because I can't get a signal anywhere in Reston, VA (since I live there, that's a problem) and because their customer service is even more unhelpful than Comcast!
