BGR posts AppleCare reception troubleshooter for iPhone 4

As Erica demonstrates in the video above, for some iPhone 4 users it's not that hard to show how the phone's reception is affected by holding it 'wrong.' BoyGeniusReport has a copy of what they claim is AppleCare's internal troubleshooting procedure for iPhone 4, which boils down to "the iPhone 4's antenna is great; avoid holding it that way; and no, you aren't getting a free bumper." BGR also points out that if this is the official line, notably absent is any hint of a software fix coming (counter to what AppleInsider suggested last week). Of course, if there isn't a problem, then why would Apple be planning to fix it?

To an extent, Apple (and Steve Jobs who was widely reported to have told a user not to hold their iPhone a certain way) is right. All cell phones have this issue. Yes, Nokia, even yours. But Apple's blasé response to this issue is going to give it legs, especially when Apple's solution is to buy a $30 bumper that they just happened to have started selling to coincide with the iPhone 4 release.

Speaking as someone who remembers when iPhones used to come with a dock in the box, and who assumes that the actual production cost of a bumper is probably closer to $5 than $30, I'm surprised Apple isn't trying to avoid the seemingly inevitable class action lawsuit by throwing in a bumper to anyone who has the problem and brings their iPhone 4 into an Apple Store. After all, Nintendo put a wrist strap on the Wii Remote but still gave away plastic grips to help people who were losing control of them. And the story died.

There's no doubt that this issue is clouding the iPhone 4's release, even if the issue is only affecting a small percentage of iPhone 4 users (and we don't know what that percentage is). My friend Richard Gaywood posted a detailed explanation of the issue and why it is more likely to be discernible in areas of weak coverage (which AT&T customers refer to as "just about everywhere"). AnandTech posted a detailed explanation as well. MacRumors reported the experience of one user who resolved reception problems with a reseating of the iPhone's MicroSIM, which is easy enough to try on your own.

So our question to you iPhone 4 owners is: have you seen it?

My iPhone 4 dropped every single phone call today...I am a major Apple fan and want it to work but can't ignore the poor performance. I had a case on it (FrogZ) but switched to an Apple Bumper today to see if any better...very close to returning the phone and waiting until they get this sorted out.

Sat side by side with my sister today - she with an iPhone 4.0 that she swore had dropped every single call she had made since it arrived 6/26. I sat 24" away with my iPhone 3GS running 4.0 software. She held her bare phone gingerly with two fingers at the TOP of the phone, avoiding the lower left corner. Had zero bars and an E for signal strength and could not make or receive a call. I had 5 bars signal strength and no problems.

I gave her my Apple Bumper (waiting for my iPhone 4 that hasn't arrived yet) and her bars jumped right up...waiting to see if it resolves most of her problems. She is having the face activating buttons problem as well.

It's my dock in a box! It's my dock in a box, girl...

Sorry, couldn't help myself.

I am in Japan. Some part of Tokyo i cannot replicate the Death Grip but some places i do.I think simply a combination of both the antenna and iOS.

fell into the pool with my original iphone. still waiting for it to dry out before I see if it works. (I put it in a bowl of uncooked rice to absorb the moisture)

I am alarmed by the complaints about iPhone 4. but I will only know if it affects me purchasing one if I actually go to the store and try it myself. I won't know how I will hold the phone until I pick it up.

that being said, I'm not going to change the way I hold it if I naturally have the death grip - I just won't buy it. I'll gladly wait it out for the next version. an although smart for the long run, I usually can't stand phone-bras because of difficulty pulling out of pockets.

Apple = love/hate relationship - kinda like a really sexy girlfriend but who is surprisingly rigid and overly controlling!

This problem is worse in lower signal areas. After Jobs first reply stating it didn't affect the calls and after engadget's review stating fewer dropped calls, I wondered if it was really an issue.

Well two days later I was helping my brother setup his new iphone 4 and tried to call him to test/demo facechat, he had been holding the phone wrong long enough that there were no bars and my call went straight to vm.

I'm in the same boat. I can reproduce the losing bars, but I have to hold the phone if a very specific way in which I would never hold the phone under any circumstances... Except for when I'm purposely trying to reproduce the issue that is.

Where is the "I don't have an iPhone 4 yet you insensitive clod!" option in the poll?

I made a web page to show how to do this fix:

http://www.andylynn.net/Site/Blog/Entries/2010/6/30_iPhone_4_Reception_Fix.html

I'm still not sure how or why or whether any of this works but preliminarily it looks like it might be useful. Maybe the real fix is for Apple to do a recall and replace the sim card holder with one that's plastic on the inside.
