Ducati creates a short film with the iPhone 4

I have to eat my words -- despite my belief before launch that an iPhone 4 wouldn't be hard to find without a preorder, I'm still waiting to get the chance to buy one. But I got to play with another one last night (that screen!), and just like every other time I've had a chance to use it, I've been very impressed by the back camera. Both stills and HD video look really amazing when taken with that thing. Here's another example: the Ducati motorcycle team filmed the entire commercial above on eight different iPhone 4s over a period of four days -- watching it in HD shows off just what this camera is capable of.

They did use the Owle Bubo, which explains some of the better shots a little bit. And you can also see that slight shudder so common to low-end HD cameras, especially when the camera pans quickly or tries to capture fast motion. But especially without color correction, the images still look terrific for a camera on your phone. The audio is great as well, but I'm not convinced they did that with only a phone. The final video was edited together in Adobe Premiere, just because "there were enough unknowns" without trying to use iMovie on iPhone for the first time.

Update: Looks like it's part of a contest -- if you've ever wanted to try and make a film and you've got an iPhone 4, get to it!

Thanks to Zenas and Jeff for sending this one in.

If they used the Owle Bubo, I'm sure it was solely that. I have one and the mic for it is outstanding.

Apparently filmed during The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, the second oldest motor sports race in America (Indy is the only one older).

Interesting point - iPhone Environmental requirements "Maximum operating altitude: 10,000 feet (3000 m)". Well, it appears the iPhone 4 easily exceeds these numbers since this race starts at 9,390ft and ends at 14,110ft!

iPhone exceeding specs? Of course! Sorry, couldn't resist...

Made entirely on iPhone 4, edited on iMovie 08.
The mistake I made was to import to iMovie in large format rather than HD format, thus did not get the 720p resolution.

It also means that at a very low price for entry you can actually learn how to make a movie by actually doing it whenever and where-ever you want since the phone is with you all the time without having to worry about all the technicalities of operating a pro camera but being able to produce images that are on par with a pro camera.

I have an iPhone4, the Owle, and am a HUGE Ducati fan.

Looks like I have to get the Multistrada now and start filming.

What a GREAT excuse.

A famous director with an iPhone 3GS (not ever the iPhone 4) can make a better commercial than a random film student with the huge Hollywood budget.

It's less about the hardware and more about knowing how film works. And that's something that you only learn with years of experience.

As such, it's a great video, but let's not have people suddenly thinking that having an iPhone 4 means you can be the worlds next great film director.

totally incorrect. a "famous director" should be replaced with "good storyteller" and "random film student" should be replaced with "generic hollywood director"

i understand the point you were making, but you worded it way way wrong.
