How you hold your iPhone

Earlier this week were discussing the Death Grip and comparing how we hold our iPhones. I thought we should pose the question to you. Several readers added photos of their preferred method to our Flickr pool, and we noticed two main styles among them: the Cradle and the Death Grip.

The Cradle is pictured at right. The iPhone rests on top of the pinky while the other fingers support it like a stand. The thumb is then free to reach and tap.

The Death Grip is any hold that contacts the lower left-hand corner of the phone and bridges the gap between the two antennas, as that's what appears to trigger the signal issue. The results were nearly split: 9 of you used some variant of the Cradle, while 8 employed a full-on Death Grip. One fellow followed Apple's suggestion to a T, as you'll see in the gallery below.

Thanks for sharing your photos with us, everyone. Now ... who's got antenna issues? Take our poll from earlier today and let us know.

I've been hearing all these complaints and the thing is, who holds their phone like that anyway? The death grip is not ergonomic at all when holding it to your ear. I wouldn't be surprised if apple is being lax on the back tracking just to sell more of those stupid bumpers.

you're supposed to use the Force so your fingers don't touch it at all. It will of course cause the iPhone to perform badly depending on whether you are using the light side or the dark side and it's interaction with the RDF. Debate.

Well, not like a fricken' idiot for sure...

I don't see why people are complaining about the iPhone 4 and it's signal bar problems, but any phone has reception issues if you find the wrong way to hold it in order to make it happen. So this really shouldn't be a big deal. The original iPhone and the iPhone 3G also suffer from this. My crap phone from 5 years ago suffered from it.

Some people are just... ignorant.

I get the signal loss all the way down to 1 tiny bar. The weird thing is that it never completely loses signal and say "searching" AND I can replicate it w/ a case (Apple Bumper and also a Rocketfish).

So, how is that a "contact/interference" issue w/ the frame?

Also, when I'm at work, I can't replicate it no matter what. (25 miles away from home.) I live in a metropolitan city, but work in a slightly rural area.

I was affected by death grip and tried popping out sim card and I am happy to say it worked. I cannot stand cases, big ol stupid bobo looking cases I should say. Anyways give it a try, I wonder if such a simple fix is the answer to everyone's woes. I noticed when I took sim card out there is a little play and that sim card is not snug. It took me a couple trys.

Why oh why does almost every article mention the issues with the iPhone 4 is an issue for left handers

Almost all left handers actually hold the phone in their right hand!

It leaves the left hand free for using the mouse an typing....

Yeah I don't get that. I'm right handed and my phone goes in my left hand. It's like wearing a watch. You put it on the hand you use less.

THANK GOD FOR SOME SANITY.

This has been a bug bear for me, but if I commented on every inaccurate topic about left hand use, I'd be permanently typing.

I am right handed, but holding the phone in my right hand seems completely wrong and would be an impossible habit to break.

I think most right handed people (certainly those who use a computer) hold a handset (mobile or static) in their LEFT hand because it allows you to continue to use your mouse!!!!!

I think you guys are overdoing it now. The issue (if its one) is being blown way out of proportion. I've seen 6 iPhone 4s in Germany and NONE of them had such a problem.
