Exchange users on iOS 4 need an updated config profile

The path to ActiveSync nirvana for iPhone 4/iOS 4 users has not run all that smooth over the past couple of weeks. There were dramatic slowdowns for Google Apps and Exchange users who tried to synchronize calendar and mail data, although matters improved after the first day or two. Worse, some Exchange administrators noticed a drag on their servers associated with the influx of iOS 4 devices. Not so hot.

Good news, though: Apple has a suggested solution for these issues, and all it requires is downloading a new Exchange/ActiveSync configuration profile to your device (or, in the case of corporate deployments, scores of devices) and installing it. The new profile doesn't do much except extend the timeouts for contacting Exchange servers, but in this case that should get the job done.

If you've experienced this issue (or tried the fixed profile), let us know.

FYI, I tried this and it wasn't working. The reason was because I had the FTP on the Go app installed and it apparently associated itself with the ".mobileconfig" file extension, which is what this exchange config file was. So, Safari kept asking me to open it with FTP on the Go, and not the system settings, as it should have. To be able to install, I had to delete FTP on the Go and then redownload it in Safari.

My iPhone 4 was working fine, but I decided to install the profile after reading about it, just to head off any potential future issues. It messed up my inbox; e-mails from a couple weeks ago were showing up on the iPhone that weren't in Outlook or Outlook Web Access. No matter how many times I restarted the phone or refreshed, the e-mails wouldn't go away.

I ended up having to remove the profile, then delete my Exchange account on the iPhone and add it again. I don't know why the profile caused phantom e-mails to appear, but I'm definitely staying away from it on my iPhone 4.

We got a company-wide email on Tuesday stating (company name removed):

"[We are] aware of an issue affecting iPhone devices with the latest operating system (iOS4) causing Exchange ActiveSync Mail, Contacts, or Calendars not to sync, or sync very slowly. The issue can also cause [our] Exchange servers to suffer degraded performance, thereby impacting e-mail services for all [of our] people. "

We were given a link to the profile patch. What's funny is that my co-worker was able to install this directly from his iPhone, where as I had to download it and email it to myself via my laptop. When I tried from my iphone, I just got a page with an image of the file.

Anyway, it worked. Syncing is faster, battery is back to "normal" for my 3GS.

Same here except it was more of a threat. Do this or lose access...
It was working fine before and after.
Gmail exchange is another thing altogether. It is periodically out and in out and in but generally gmail has become a lot better than it was on iOS4 release day.

I'm sick of Apple's neglect of the enterprise market. Why on earth didn't they properly test this?? Unbelievable!

I will be moving to Android, at least with apps like Touchdown you have a supplier who's focused on enterprise and is not obsessed with trivialities.

iOS = freedom from choice.

cleaning up your gmail account (deleting trash, all emails from half a year ago, etc) has made my gmail exchange account work again. shouldn't have had to do it, but it worked.

Still have the issue with home screen lock, and the 'continue search on server' does not actually search the server.... IMAP for now, sadly.....

PS this method of changing config files via a browser download (or I guess SMS message too) is cool. Can this be used for anything else?

Yes this is a fix. Found this about 4 days ago due to high network traffic at multiple Exchange Sites within our environment. We have around 70 Exchange Servers spread over a wide area (Australia).

We noticed network traffic from our BE Exchange Servers to our FE Exchange Servers after the iOS 4 upgrades.

I created a bit.ly link to the Config Profile download which I SMS to affected users that have already upgraded. I recommend running the Config Profile on our iOS 4 devices that sync via Exchange ActiveSync.

Also MS Exchange blog have posted an article about this issue.

This may be the issue behind the battery life on 3G and 3GS phones with iOS4 being horrible since the upgrade as well.

@Scott Brown: There's an apple kb article with a new mobile config here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3398

I installed the profile and will report back after a full charge tonight.

@Joshua Might be the reason but I haven't noticed battery issues with my iPhone 3GS.

Also I understand there is the http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3398 but I just created the bit.ly link so that I can send out via SMS to directly download the Config Profile without instructing users to go to http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3398 and then click the link within this article to download the Config Profile.

Cheers

I did this this afternoon, after searching message boards for an hour, I found a link to the profile update. Seems to be working fine for me on the 3G.

This fix definitely doesn't work entirely.

The use case seems to be (at least for us) users with very large (thousands of items) Inboxes. Users that keep their Inbox small (by moving items to other folders) seem to be okay even without the modified profile.

None of these users had any issues in 3.x; so it's definitely a 4.0 issue. We are hoping for a fix soon!

This doesn't fix ActiveSync issues with Gmail for me. Going back to IMAP.
