Oklahoma State University to start up iPad initiative
Oklahoma State University is the latest school to start setting students up with iPads. Starting this fall, a pilot program will give iPads to 125 students, and the university will monitor both how the device affects their learning and what their textbook costs turn out to be. Additionally, the classes in the pilot program will look at using both apps and Web-based tools on the devices, as is appropriate for the classroom. What's interesting is that, instead of just handing out iPads to the students, OSU is really interested in how their students will go about using them. The results should be intriguing, not only for the lucky college kids who get to use iPads all semester but also for Apple and for other schools that are formulating plans over how to share and use technology. It certainly seems like having an iPad at college would be helpful in the traditional ways (you could read textbooks or take notes on it), but it's cool that OSU is thinking about new ways to use it as well, such as apps for tests or connections across local Wi-Fi for networked learning.
We'll see how OSU's program works out. The iPad is certainly a new kind of computer, and it sounds like OSU is looking for new ways of using it on campus.

So far my favorite app is Soundhound. It brings so many music library features together in one place - great for exploring new artists, or watching videos of your fave band. It blew me away when it went off and found the lyrics to the music I was playing from my on-board mp3 tunes without prompting!

We're just finishing up a class this week that was done entirely with iPads. There were no printed materials, no books, and even lectures projected on the screen were done with Keynote through an iPad.
The only real problem I'm aware of is the poor Wi-Fi reception these things have. We finally had to put an access point in the classroom.
Mr. Strat, I am one of the professors involved in the Pilot. I am already evaluating a number of apps and have a long list to get through before the beginning of the semester. I am curious if you used anything beyond the traditional readers (goodreader, office2 HD, etc.) and apple apps (pages, keynote, etc.).
Feel free to hit me off list, all my contact information is available on my website (below)
OSUGuy, glad we are adding to your Orange Pride! Go Cowboys!!! (sorry, couldn't resist)
Snowmentality, there are some great diagram apps on the iPad. I tend to be a visual thinker so these were the first I tried.
Thanks.

I'm not the one teaching the class. I'm the IT guy supporting it though.
It was an introductory Spanish class. She used BITKnights Spanish-English Dictionary with Spanish speech, Voice Recorder HD, and Keynote. There was also a Web site that I think was some kind of subscription thing. I know I installed iBooks, but not sure if they used it. I'll know more in the coming weeks as the course is evaluated.
Right now, I need to go over to pick up the iPads. I guess today is the last day. We had them engraved "Property of..." on the back along with our asset code number.
I would have needed a pen tool to really use the iPad for note-taking in college -- I was a physics major, so most of my notes were diagrams and scribbled math equations.
However, I did double-major in one of the humanities, and having searchable and annotatable PDFs of my books would have been incredible. I remember so often frantically flipping through one book or another trying to find that perfect quote that would prove my point.
Online tests can get gimmicky unless done really right, as can "networked learning." It will definitely take some time to figure out the best way to use iPads in class.

Ouch. Did this not get proofread before being posted?
that's exactly what I was wondering
