Unofficial Lemmings for iPhone gets C&D
Developer Aaron Ardiri pulled off the crazy feat last week of porting the classic Lemmings game from Palm OS not only to the iPhone, but also to Windows and the Mac ... in just 36 hours. That's 36 hours straight -- he liveblogged the whole process, and did actually pull it off, sending the iPhone app, which you can see above, into the App Store for approval.
There's just one hitch -- Ardiri doesn't actually own the Lemmings property. Sony does, and as soon as the company heard about his port, it dropped a cease and desist letter on him, commanding him to remove all ports he's hosted and not to port any other Sony games. So there's no way, as of now, that we'll see this app in the App Store.
Of course, if Sony knows what's good for them, the company could pay Ardiri to release the port for them, and we could all play the old version of Lemmings on the iPhone (and pay for the privilege). Ardiri says he'll "open communication" for such a deal, so we'll have to wait and see.

Awesome, but haven't I been seeing the same levels of lemmings for the last 20 years? Did they ever make new ones?

as for the article, there is also a version for palm pre, which was also submitted for review/release - and we can easily build a linux version (ubuntu, moblin, meego, et al) as well. we just never started the virtual machine to build it during this period.
as for the "port", it is unfortunate to get a C&D from sony - namely since we were going to release this for free as a tribute to the game. what it means now is one of two things, we either
- work out a deal with sony (unlikely, but worth a shot)
- rework all the art, sounds, levels and release it as a new title
we did actually start talking with art people a while ago to redo all of the artwork, but due to previous commitments, it was not a feasible thing, however, now with the response we have received from this port, we are considering doing it. exactly the same game, very similar levels and just a new name - it could still make it to the store.
lets see what SCEE wants to talk about around licensing, and worst case - it will come under another form, we do have a few concepts in mind.
Sorry Aaron but as much as I applaud your ability to produce the game in such short a time, I find it appalling that anyone would take someone's IP without asking. It's Andy
Giving it away for free does not justify your actions as it denies the IP holder from making any more money off of their work in the future. It's not "unfortunate" to get a C&D - it's appropriate.
I don't think you should just change the artwork and levels either. Why not do something original?
Can he port Manic Miner too? Love that game..

If you're going to rip off someone's IP, at least have the decency to do something with it, rather than duplicating every pixel of the original.
New graphics, new levels, new gameplay, doesn't matter. Just something.
Modify the character, pink hair, yellow body, call them Squeejays, and : Bang : Whole New Game..
(*by which I mean, DRAW, not copy+paste the freakin' sprites and recolour them*)
Add editor, job done.
Not likely to happen (authorized iPhone or WebOS port that is)
Lemmings is already available for the PSP. If it came out for any phones, it would likely come out for Sony Erricson phones.
Why don't you spell his name right. It's Aaron Ardiri.
July 03 2010 at 4:30 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyHah! Sony will never let it happen.
Sadly :(
I really hope they see the light... but im very much doubtful. Afterall, they have their own (failing) portable games system to support...
I would seriously love me some Lemmings on my iPhone and iPad. Sony, get it going!
