AT&T uplink performance issues tied to Alcatel-Lucent equipment

Spokespersons for AT&T have responded to our queries in regard to decreased uplink performance that we posted about earlier this week. According to AT&T, this is due to a software defect in Alcatel-Lucent equipment, affecting only some portions of their customer base. The full statement from AT&T follows.

AT&T and Alcatel-Lucent jointly identified a software defect -- triggered under certain conditions - that impacted uplink performance for Laptop Connect and smartphone customers using 3G HSUPA-capable wireless devices in markets with Alcatel-Lucent equipment. This impacts less than two percent of our wireless customer base. While Alcatel-Lucent develops the appropriate software fix, we are providing normal 3G uplink speeds and consistent performance for affected customers with HSUPA-capable devices.
We are gratified to hear both that reader reports were pretty much universally accurate and that these issues do not signal a change in AT&T's data usage policies. We are glad to be proven wrong from our initial hypothesis (needing to limit data bandwidth due to heavy usage patterns). We do not have any word yet as to when repairs will go into effect but AT&T assures us that work on those fixes are underway.

It's hard to tell what that "2%" number means. Perhaps they are talking about their smart phone user base because the number of cities affected seem to be pretty wide, at least as reported by our users. Keep an eye on your stats and let us know when you start seeing improvements. As for "normal 3G uplink speeds", we're still testing in the low 60's (or worse) here in Denver. How about you?

I tried 2 tests and had 216 kbps and 227 kbps. My low was on 7/7 with 63 kbps. I seem to be back to what I was getting throughout June.

I am noticing a similar problem with upload speeds on my AT&T
microcell. Just for kicks I turned off wifi and used Speedtest to
measure my 3G data speeds over the microcell. I get 2536 Kbit/s on
download but only 45 Kbit/s on upload. I've tried this numerous
times and get the same result. I tried the same test on a 5-bar 3G
tower connection and got 300+Kbit/s upload. I tried the same test on my microcell with a 3GS phone -- same result.

Anyone else notice this on their microcell? I know that this is
somewhat moot for data as I would be using wifi, but a) it seems weird, and
b) I wonder if it has any effect on voice call quality.

Still having the issues in the Northern CA Central Valley. .60 up is actually good compared to what I'm getting right now.

Just did several tests using SpeedTest app in Columbus OH - average download is around 700kbps and uploads were between 57 to 98. I tested my phone both before and after doing the magical "reset network settings" and noticed no difference.

I see no "breaking" reference in the post...

Anywho, this issue is still very present for me in the Wyomissing, PA area. Just got over 4Mb DOWN, and only 98Kb UP.

MRCUR, you are correct, there is no reference to "breaking" in the post itself. I think Roberto was making a reference to the "Breaking News" listing on the right, where the article is listed.

In any event, these "blog x had it hours ago" comments are nothing less than asinine. In what way are they helpful at all? Speaking for myself, TUAW is the only blog I read 99 days out 100. Only so many hours in the day. So if I don't read it here, I won't know about it. Thanks for posting it, Erica, I wouldn't have known about this interesting development otherwise.

I love you TUAW. I really do.

But this is hours late. More than a few hours late.
