iPhone OS 2.1 on 3G had signal problems too

iphone os 2.1Once upon a time, iPhones had an OS update known as version 2.1, and there was much rejoicing. Actually, there was a little bit of the rejoicing and a bit more of the griping.

What was the griping about? Well, some of you kiddies might not remember this, since it was so two years ago, but the story may ring familiar: it was all about degrading signal indicator issues with the iPhone 3G.

Part of what that article notes is the existence of the field service test mode that was, then, present in the iPhone OS. It used to be pretty trivial to access this mode, which would give us gadgety techno-nerds information like more detailed signal strength. A feature like that would be dandy for troubleshooting the iPhone 4's recent disappearing bars problems, but Apple decided to remove access to test mode in iOS 4.

Seeing as this issue cropped up in the early days of the iPhone 3G, AT&T's response to it then seems to indicate that, quite simply, a software update will fix the signal strength indicator problem in the iPhone 4. Let's just hope it comes out sooner than later so that we can stop talking about this issue already.

Thanks Ilkyone for the tip!

I thought it was 2.0 that had the 3G issues, which got progressively worse through 2.0.2, then 2.1 fixed the issue with the signal on the iPhone 3G.

At least on my iPhone 3G at the time, 2.0.x had MASSIVE signal issues, unable to hold onto a 3G signal, then 2.1 came along and EVERYTHING was better.

I'm surprised I totally forgot about this. However, I don't think it's just a software problem this time around as there have been reports of problems with the actual antenna. We will find out once Apple release the new software.

I was surprised this hasn't been brought up before. As soon as SJobs said they were displaying the signal incorrectly I thought of this.

After this update at 2.1 my iPhone 3G has problems with wi-fi. I hope that with the next update from Apple, they will not broke again the Wi-Fi network

@Chris, I had the same thoughts. At the time, I said all Apple would do was make the phone show more bars for the same signal, because the placebo effect would make everybody shut up. It appears I was 100% right, and now it has come full circle. Glad to see others making the same connection. My iPhone 3G has always either had 5 bars, or 1/none. There's no middle ground, which has always indicated the indicator was screwy.

Those were fun days because shortly after that update was when AT&T started the "more bars in more places" campaign. All I could do was laugh.

Its funny that no one brought this up recently. my recollection of things was that people were complaining that their iphones were showing less bars than other phones at the same location. So apple's "fix" was to change how they reported bars. It appears that this backfired with the iphone 4's death grip since you might think you have strong signal when you really don't. Then once you death grip the phone you loose 24dB and possibly your call. So apple's "fix" isn't going to stop you from loosing 24dB, its just going to show you when your bars are low enough to have the death grip be a problem. Loosing a bar when you actually have a good signal isn't a big deal. Loosing a bar when you only have one or two is.
