More photography with the iPhone

The above video shows a fashion photo shoot taken completely with an iPhone, and it isn't even the iPhone 4! The photographer uses only an iPhone 3GS. I think there might be a little cheating involved; the lighting is overdone and the photos were sent off to a retoucher, so it's not that surprising that they look as good as they do. Then again, considering that all fashion shoots probably have that kind of lighting and retouching applied to them, the fact that the iPhone can even compete is pretty impressive.

If you like iPhone photography, you might want to check out the eyephoneography blog; it's a site that features some great photographs that are taken strictly with mobile phones (including the iPhone). They just announced an exhibit that will take place next September in Madrid, Spain, and they're also working with another blog called iPhoneography to spotlight and show off some of the best iPhone 4-based photography on the Web. It's pretty cool stuff. The iPhone's mobility and interface have always made it a pretty good camera, but with the arrival of HD on the iPhone 4, it's turned into an even better tool for photographers.

This was a great video. And it ended perfectly:

Model: How's the service with the iPhone?

Photographer: Uh, not as good as Verizon.

The lighting is not overdone.

What would you know?

For more on this, I did an audio interview with the video's creator, Lee Morris:

Even the camera on the iPhone 3G takes some nice pictures. Well, this one is slightly edited, but completely with free software, so... Not bad. I took this one of a friend in a convertible. This picture was completely spontaneous too.

Not bad for a cell phone... I remember when a grey blur was a nice cell phone camera picture.

Did any of you complainers watch this video with the sound on? Or reference the source site - obviously not.
The point was to prove that the camera is not the main factor and that any crappy camera would work - so the crappiest camera they had to hand was the iphone.
All that "metric ton" of expensive lighting came down to cheapo work lights from Lowes - not exactly high dollar and the modelling lights from those strobes.
Were you guys even listening?

I still have to give it up to the creators though. Making a short video like this made me realize it truly isnt about the fancy CAMERA equipment that makes a photograph, but more about how you use your equipment. Granted this guy had hundreds of $$$ of lighting equipment, just the fact that he used his iPhone to do a shoot, a fashion shoot to boot, is pretty daumn impressive.

With that said, I am willing to bet that it has inspired many an iPhone user to start using the iPhone as a good alt. camera on photoshoots. Maybe.

Here is my foto in the foray (sans retouching):

I've been collecting my iPhone photography at inthebackofbeyond.com for a few years now -- it started as a challenge to my wife's constant complaints about the limitations of the camera on the original iPhone, and it's become a difficult habit to break!

An artist-photographer, equipped with a simple pin-hole camera can capture award wining photographs in their own backyards. Artistry is in the soul, not in the equipment.

I saw this a few days ago. As a serious amateur photographer, I was not at all surprised with the results. This type of photography - maybe most photography - is not about the camera.

(One of the worst "compliments" we hear is: "Wow, that's a great image; you must have a great camera.")

Someone with a good eye will always get good results given a good model, hair and make up stylist, lighting and retouching.

Yes, I'm quite tired of my wife's insistence that she will take better pictures with a "better" camera. We keep buying "better" cameras but her pictures don't improve, because she stubbornly refuses to learn how to use even the most basic functions of the camera beyond the shutter release and the playback buttons.
