Dropbox + text editing = Droptext
Most of the bloggers here at TUAW are huge fans of Dropbox, the free cloud storage service. Since you can share documents with all of your iDevices, wouldn't it be nice to be able to edit your files from any of them as well? There are actually several solutions for cross-platform on-the-go Dropbox file editing, like Documents To Go Premium (US$14.99) for both iPhone and iPad. However, if your need is just for plain vanilla text file editing for iOS, you might want to take a look at Droptext ($0.99) from developer Kevin Smith.
Any type of file with a MIME type of TEXT can be opened from Dropbox and edited in Droptext. Those files types include .txt, .php, HTML, CSS, and many source code types. Smith promises to add the ability to add your own file extensions in a future version of Droptext. Editable file types appear with a text file icon when you browse your Dropbox, and they're opened immediately with a tap. When you're done editing, tap Save, and the file is saved back on Dropbox in its revised form.
It's not a fancy app, but Droptext does what it is supposed to do -- bring Dropbox text editing to iOS.

I use DropText for web/code editing from my iPad. I created an Applescript application that watches a folder (within my Dropbox) for updated content and when it sees an update, it pushes that to my webserver. Edit in DropText, see the result on the server in about 30 seconds. Very cool.

We're one step closer to the fabled G-Drive with this app, simply add a short cut to your send-to folder and you can right click on files and send them to Google Docs.

GoodReader will let you edit text documents too and with style.
it would be cool if I could move files between my idisk and dropbox.
and it general - idisk should have the functionality of dropbox.
plus the ability to mark any folder on my computer hard drive as "available in idisk" - that would be something useful and apple should do that
You can't save back to Dropbox from Pages unfortunately :(
I bought Documents to Go Premium for that facility alone, it's so handy on the go especially as I use a shared "Work" folder in my dropbox with a colleague to make sure we always have the same documentation on the go.
Does anyone know if this can create new text files? Documents to Go will let you create new files but only Word, Excel and Powerpoint files - being able to create a TXT file would be handy.
Better put my link too I guess.. extra 250mb storage to use both if you use this : https://www.dropbox.com/referrals/NTIzMDE4Njk
Oh another useful tool for dropbox is GFI Backup Home Edition (http://www.gfi.com/backup-hm) I use it to backup stuff automatically to my dropbox over night.
Bought it anyway and you can indeed create new files! Nice one, it's quick and easy and will definitely be used daily by me now.
July 12 2010 at 3:35 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyHas anyone used Dropbox on the iPad with the iWorks apps yet? Since the newest Dropbox app allows you to open files that are associated with other specific apps, I'm assuming this might be possible. That being said, I don't know if you can save files back to Dropbox from the iPad. (My iPad ships this week, so eventually I'll be able to try this firsthand.)
*sigh* With the inevitable link parade for referrals popping up in these comments, I might as well throw my Dropbox referral link out there for anyone who's interested as well: https://www.dropbox.com/referrals/NTQ4MjUyMjM5
Dropbox on the iPad will offer to open a file in GoodReader, but I can't find a way to exchange files between Pages and Dropbox.

Uh-oh, this whole comments section is going to be nothing but people wanting to increase their dropbox storage...
