Consumer Reports now 'can't recommend' the iPhone 4
After a recent positive blog post stating that the iPhone 4 reception issues were not something that should prevent someone from buying the new iPhone, the nationwide testing firm has now changed its mind and given a thumbs down to Apple's latest efforts. In lab tests, Consumer Reports says the signal "can significantly degrade to cause you to lose your connection altogether if you're in an area with a weak signal." Three iPhone 4s were tested in an RF isolation chamber, and while the signal fell out on the new iPhone, CR didn't see the same issues on an iPhone 3GS or a Palm Pre.
The tests also showed that putting some duct tape (of course!!) on the lower left portion of the iPhone antenna strip helps a great deal, and they speculate a case would do the trick as well. The testing firm adds that the iPhone 4 scored at the top of the list in every other feature, so the reception issue is a deal-killer for the firm. CR says that Apple will have to provide "a permanent -- and free fix" before it recommends the iPhone 4.

I think I'll hold off till they fix it.

No body goes to a car dealership with the intention of going to buy a "lemon car" thats whats happening here with the I phone 4. The product is defective by design never till now has one been told to hold a phone in a certain way in order to receive reception or not. It is the same problem the 3gs had when you could not delete a number without deleting all your recents. i was charged $360.00 for this phone and am returning it to AT&T right away.

As for the reception issue with iPhone 4, I've not dropped a call yet despite the signal strength appearing identical to my previous original iPhone. The way the signal fluctuates, and the dramatic signal drop when holding the phone "in that particular way," I have experienced. I hold my phone in my right hand when on calls, so do not experience the signal drop on voice, but I see it all the time using data, holding the phone in my left hand, so I have to adjust.
Unfortunately, even if this problem doesn't impact you in your daily use of the phone, it will eventually impact you when you try to resell your phone (and buyers either shy away or price down this model because it's a lemon.)
Apple really needs to own up and stand behind their product -- either by guaranteeing a software fix or failing that an extended money-back return period, or by promising full credit exchanges/tradeups when the problem gets fixed in the next hardware revision.
Good for CR. Simple test, fair conclusion: awesome phone with a flaw Apple should fix for free before CR can recommend.
I wouldn't be surprised if Apple is working on a fix strategy right now, something between free bumper and replacement phone.
Could this be why Iphone4 remains in short supply?

July 13 2010 at 4:11 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI saw my FIRST covered iPhone 4, today. It had a hideous nude-colored/slightly transparent.....skin on it. Gross. I wonder if Apple has a secret partnership with these accessory manufacturers. It would make sense....AS WELL AS CENTS ($$$)!!!
They'd be making a KILLING! Typically so. It's aaaaaall about the money. smh =/
I'm not having the antenna problem in day to day use. I can make it happen, but it's just not how I use the phone.
I am, however, having really annoying problems with the proximity sensor. Constantly hanging up on peope, muting myself, or putting people on hold. THIS is the problem I'd like to see fixed.
You guys are missing the point. A company with more mobile phone experience (but terrible UI) - put the antenna in the least obstructive place possible. Apple, who it seems did all their testing with phones enclosed in FAKE iPhone 3Gs cases, put their antenna in a TERRIBLE place for a smart phone.
The most annoying part of this whole debacle is that Apple is suggesting that incorrect signal strength reporting - which they have benefitted from up till now - is the problem when it has been proven by Consumer Reports (and others before them) that the placement of the antenna is clearly not ideal.
I'm not saying the iPhone isn't a great device - because it is - but it seems Apple dropped the ball with the antenna placement and customers should be aware. Apple has a history of ignoring problems with their products (dodgy Time Capsules is just the latest) - this is just another example of that.
You guys making excuses for them is only helping to encouraging Apple to try and sweep this under the rug. However - I have a feeling that's not going to happen this time... Me, I'm going to wait for iPhone 4 Revision 2 - featuring MAGICAL and REVOLUTIONARY antenna placement! "Look, you can still make a call if you hold the phone in you left hand - how cool is that?".
