iPad stealing sales of e-readers and portable game consoles

A report recently published by Resolve Market Research and shared by Mashable is showing that the market is responding in exactly that manner. A full 49% of survey respondents answered that they would not by an e-reader after purchasing an iPad, followed closely by 38% saying that they would forgo the purchase of a portable game console if they bought an iPad. The iPhone has already had an impact on sales of gaming consoles, and the upcoming deployment of iOS4 on iPad as well as the advent of Apple's Game Center may prove to
The Resolve study also shows that for 37% of respondents, the iPad would be their first Apple product. For many people, the iPhone was a gateway product that resulted in future purchases of other Apple products, so there's a possibility that the iPad could also create the same halo effect.
All was not rosy in the Resolve study. 58% of respondents perceived the iPad to be "an expensive toy." When asked why they'd reject the iPad, 54% noted that they "didn't see a need for it," while 46% believed that "it's too expensive." My son was a heavy Kindle user. He bought an iPad as soon as it was available, and says he could never go back. I read on my iPad every day; my wife has a Kindle and I don't like using it at all. To the Kindle's credit, it is small and light. But if retina display comes to iPad, it will be a revolution in the e-reader space.

July 12 2010 at 4:36 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplySince more and more games are being released that were released on DS it is replacing it. My little brother is 7 and he plays on my iPhone and an old 3G we just gave him along with my iPad. He loves playing games on them, especially Battle Bears.

One device on a trip... which only means one device, one cord and one charger?
Let me think... yes.
I'm shocked that anyone with half a brain would choose an amazing, multi-faceted iPad over a dull, single-purpose e-reader or game console!
July 12 2010 at 3:50 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThe problem with a traditional eReader and browsing is that the eInk is crap for browsing anything other than text. Also, the one trick pony aspect of it is a real turn-off; I want to carry less devices when I travel, not more.
As it stands now I'll be able to leave my laptop and iPod at home, and just carry my Android phone (with wifi hotspot capability).
It's not for everyone, but I can handle reading on it (100+ pages at a time) and the functionality beyond that (Office stuff, RDP, VNC, SSH, Citrix, games, music, movies, photos, etc etc) are all just icing on the cake.
