Rumor: AT&T giving 3G MicroCells to long-standing customers

Engadget is reporting that one of its readers, Jason, received a letter from AT&T offering him a free 3G MicroCell with no strings attached. He brought the letter to the store and sure enough it was honored, even thought the sales team was baffled as to why he got it.

The letter addresses Jason as one of their "most valuable customers." Jason also notes that his contract is about to expire, and he's got a few iPhones on a family plan. It sounds to us that, much like a lovelorn teen about to lose his girlfriend, AT&T is pulling out all the stops to keep a floundering relationship alive.

Rumors about a Verizon-powered iPhone have buzzed about like annoying mosquitos almost since the iPhone's introduction. The most recent points at January of 2011, though your guess is as good as ours.

If you're among AT&T's "most valuable customers," monitor your mailbox for an orange envelope. And if you score one of these things, let us know.

Considering that getting a Microcell made my already poor call quality even worse, I can see why they would give them away just so they don't have to deal with people returning them. You would think all the tech support calls are going to have hit on the bottom line though.

I like the fact she forgets that the U.S. is the worlds biggest consumer of Apple iPhones and that we only get At&T. Sorry we arent in a country that has the population of one of our states or maybe a larger city of ours.

Thanks for the story! Called AT&T today and continued my complaint about terrible service at our home. The operator credited my cell account for the price of the Micro Cell BEFORE I even purchased it. They don't sell them online, so I had to go to the store to get one. It was extremly easy to set up and I like the fact you can have up to 10 different ATT phones using the device. Here in Cali it is $19.99 a month for unlimited calling (for every att cel number you register online)connected to the MC. Don't think we'll need it, but good to know it is available. Finally, we have almost better than
landline cell calls at home (we have had a
problem with bad cell reception at our home for over
10 years!)

Hey, how long standing does one have to be to merit one of these things?

I am getting a free Microcell. I have been in to the store 3x and called AT&T once to complain about the problem. I am dropping calls in my house. I am not just having the problem on my iPhone 4, but also on my wife's Sony Ericson. It has been happening ever since our area got 3G coverage.

I thought the issue would resolve when I got an iPhone 4 (at least for me, not for my wife). It did not. I live less than half a mile from an AT&T tower.

After jumping through a few hoops, going to AT&T, having them reset my network settings, give me a new SIM, have a technician come out to the tower....I saw them again today. This time I talked to the manager. He said I should buy a Microcell. I said I don't feel I should have to pay $150 for it, I already pay $150 a month for my service. He said...for existing customers it's $50. I said again, that is too much, I shouldn't have to pay for it at all, the phone should work in my house.

He said he could not give it to me for free, but could give it to me for $50, and credit my AT&T account $50. That seems all the same to me. They were out of them right now, but they should have it in before the week is over. I was very nice the whole time...I think that may be why I was able to get it.

We just received an offer in the mail but not for a free device. My offer is to purchase it for $49.99, a hundred dollar discount. Bummer, I'd rather get it for free. :-)

We have reported cell problems from our home in the past. That might be why we got it.
