iPhone 4 unlocked, says Dev Team member

It took some doing, but the iPhone 4 has been unlocked. Unfortunately, you can't get your hands on what you'll need to do it yourself just yet.

A member of the iPhone Dev Team who goes by PlanetBeing has posted a picture of an iPhone 4 on Canada's Bell network. The feat was made more difficult with the iPhone 4 because iOS 4 on AT&T needed a soup-to-nuts rewrite of ultrasn0w.

We don't have a timeline for when the updated ultrasn0w and Spirit will be released, so we'll keep our ears pressed to the ground on that one.

For now, at least one iPhone 4 is flying free in Canada! Spread your wings, little iPhone, and keep those Canadians away from your lower left-hand corner.

Only problem is, they are not available in Canada yet.

JT what you are missing is that the phone that planetbeing unlocked was purchased in the U.S. He lives in Canada, so this is a big deal.

He's not in the US, he's in Canada just as it states in the article. The iphones in Canada already come unlocked. His point was to show that he jailbroke it. But he forgot cydia was on page 1 when he took the pic. Go and check his twitter account and you will see.

Cannot believe tuaw missed this. How do you not know they are unlocked in Canada by default, your sister publication ran the damn story.

there is a class action lawsuit happening against companies selling 'locked' mobile devices as it is just wrong, as is blind consumption.

I think the class action suit is about exclusivity/contracts, not necessarily about provider-locking.

Pika2000,

Well, if you read the brief, it is about the unlock. One point it makes is that customers are locked to AT&T, even if they have an old iphone that has been completely paid for (the contract is expired). What they seem to be seeking (in part), is the ability for a user to take such a phone (after the 2-year service contract expires) and unlock the device. Other carriers in other parts of the world already do this.

That picture could also be of a locket AT&T iPhone 4. If you own an iPhone 4 from AT&T and travel to Canada it will switch to roaming on Canada's GSM networks. I was there last week and I got the Bell logo on my AT&T locked iPhone 4. Does that mean I have an unlocked iPhone 4?? NO!

Holy s**t, for once I have to smile and agree with you Joanna. Us lucky UK buyers get unlocked phones out of the box. Hell has truly frozen over... :)

As others have pointed out, Apple is selling unlocked iPhones in certain markets (eg the UK). Therefore it's "possible" this iPhone 4 is just a foreign unlocked iPhone on Bell. As the EDIT points out, the source is credible so probably not...just sayin'

Try buying one, then linking up to T-Mobile USA.

Right. You can't. That's b/c the unsubsidized phones in the US are not unlocked. They're just unsubsidized.
