Apple to hold special iPhone 4 press conference on Friday

Apple is inviting select media representatives to a special press conference that will be held on Friday, July 16. The company provided no information about the conference other than to say it would focus on the iPhone 4.

TUAW will provide up-to-the-minute coverage of the press conference on Friday to keep you informed of what's going on. There has been some speculation of a recall of the phones, discussion of a software update to fix reception issues, and a lot of shenanigans dealing with disappearing threads in the Apple support forums. We can only hope that the company will provide straightforward answers to the questions that a lot of Apple fans are asking.

the antenna issue is really just causing an issue on a small part of the geek crowd. The people who really buys the iPhone don't give a crap about it. What they want to know is: is it an iphone? YES. Does it work? YES. Is it gorgeous? YES. Let's buy it.

Jobs: "Thank you for coming. Here are the financials, pie charts, glowing reports, et cetera; blah, blah, blah. (Points 1 through 17) Thank you for coming... Oh, there's just One More Thing..."

"We've run into something of a snag..."

Umm...does anyone else think they are just going to brag about how many phones they sold and then release the white one?

Nope. Even Steve Jobs isn't that bull-headed.

The Apple apologists are hurting this blog more than a negative post could ever do. It reinforces the nutty, forgive-all-even-when-shat-on, zealot-like view most people have of Apple fans.

Apple will not hold a conference just to announce a white iPhone (the introduction of the new Mac mini is a bigger deal and whas done via a simple press release) or to announce free bumpers. Free bumpers would simply confirm that there's a problem.

So, I'd guess they will announce a recall, maybe do some PR damage control. It's easily spun towards "this is high tech engineering, so there can be high tech problems". That would be acceptable - no shame in a bit of humility.

WTF? Another idiotic masturbatory post from the um, Unofficial "Apple" Weblog. Featuring a pic, no less, that reinforces how awful and Big Brother-like Apple is for making (another) great product that has a relatively minor flaw. Really? AppleZilla is right: the phone technologically rocks, gets great reception and has increased data reliability over the previous ones. But here at TUAW, they're just like Microsoft. Right. Tell you what, I'll pick up that cool "Kin" at Walmart and trade you for your iPhone4. Sheesh.

Okay so what did apple say would be out second half of July? O yeah the white iphone 4. I'm assuming that 16th of July counts as a second half right?

All you guys criticizing tuaw for using this photo are bozo's !
sad to know there are apple fans that fail to see irony !
perhaps you should all go back to gaming on Balmer's OS and stay
away from anything other than windows; i guess this is the downside to selling so many iphones- all of a sudden everyone is an apple diehard ! how i miss the old days !

I just want to say one thing: It's easy to be an iFan when sales are up, products are superior, and the public image is spotless, but it's times like now when Apple fans need to band together, stand their ground, and stick with our favorite company. There are few Macheads I respect more than the ones who stood strong in 1996 & 1997. They were strong when Apple needed them, and so must we be.
