More than 25% of iTunes users want the cloud

A new NPD Group survey says that if Apple ever does release its rumored cloud music service for iTunes, there will definitely be an audience. Over 25% of iTunes users polled say that they would be interested a free iTunes cloud service. And about half of those would be interested in actually paying $10 a month for services like music sharing and streaming their personal libraries through iTunes. Out of an estimated 50 million users in the US, NPD says that 15 million or so would be interested in a free service, and around 7 or 8 million wouldn't mind paying $10 a month to Apple.

Keep in mind that this is a survey done in May of this year, Apple hasn't even worked their marketing magic on something like this yet, and it doesn't even exist. If a service like that was actually offered, it's not hard to think that word of mouth and/or a well-marketed feature set would drive that audience even higher.

But NPD concludes, not too surprisingly, that there is an audience ready for any iTunes cloud plans that Apple wants to reveal. How 'bout it there, Steve?

I like the idea of streaming a copy of my library from the cloud to whatever device I have. That was what Lala did. But knowing Apple the cloud service will be only what they carry on iTunes, in other words it won't read your hard drive and upload what they don't have available in the store. It probably will work only with an iPhone or iPod Touch (it couldn't work on a regular iPod) but not a laptop. This is because its gonna be a an App, not a web service like Lala was. I hoping I'm wrong though about it not going to copying my entire library.
As far as the price goes, most likely it will be added to Mobile Me. Maybe no fee for email anymore.
But I hope they don't go to a streaming "rent music" model like others. I still like to buy my music.

The only "cloud" option i want is a central iTunes library on a computer designated by ME. Preferably OSX Server. An iTunes daemon to sync/stream/whatever music and content to all my (3) macs.

Otherwise i don't/won't care.

You know what I want? I want a version of iTunes that doesn't hang for several minutes every time I connect my iPhone to my computer.

1) Perspective doesnt understand at all what this would be. A service that reads the metadata in my itunes and allows me to stream from anywhere (either on phone or browser) similarly to a pandora or other service would be awesome. we arent saying to stream an entire library over wireless, thats just ridiculous.

2) if this is a pay service, they should make it part of mobile me. This would make that service much more valuable and likely drive up subscription to the service. it would be another perk to their loyal customers already. win-win.

I carry 30 GB on my iPhone, which requires 45 minutes to sync from empty. If you're like me, the prospect of syncing this amount of data at current wireless speeds is not at all attractive.

Uhm bullcrap, there isn't even 25% of tunes users that know what a cloud is much less want to make use of it. This study is to push an adgenda somewhere for someone but i can guarantee it isn't user driven based off the results they have cobled together.

75% of of iTunes users wants to stop using iTunes altogether (and instead, a cloud-based service like most other smartphones) for syncing iOS devices.
