NYC mayor Bloomberg loves his iPad

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg loves his iPad, apparently -- he carries it with him everywhere, uses it for briefings, and even reads speeches off of it, as seen above. He's checking weather in the places he's heading off to vacation at, and he's reading in iBooks, too -- lately it's "The Fires" by Joe Flood and "Last Call: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition" by Daniel Okent.

Very cool to see someone so busy and so important trying to seriously use Apple's magical device to improve their day-to-day. And even the Mayor realizes that what he's going is important -- he's consciously trying to go "paperless." Glad the iPad could help him. "It's amazing," he said at a tech conference recently. "I told Steve Jobs the other day, if he can improve on this, it'll really be amazing. I just, every time I play with it, I discover something new."

Wait, improve on the iPad? That's a tall order, Mr. Mayor. But maybe Cupertino will see what it can do.

The author's name is Danial Okrent. He was the first Public Editor for the Times. His interview on the Daily Show last week was one of the better ones this year.

The only way to improve iPad for now is to reduce its weight. I nearly have to do physiotherapy because of holding it too long...

Despite not seeing what all the fuss was about, and therefore not really wanting one, I was bought one a few weeks ago. And it has relegated my iPhone 3G to just a device to make calls and write SMS! I even find myself now not wanting an iPhone 4 when I upgrade later in the year, and will instead probably just get a non-smart phone.

It's the screen size, stupid...

Brilliant. And it can only get better, what with OS4(.1) on the way bringing app backgrounding, and with more universal and 'HD' apps appearing.

I'm a convert, and I love it.

Unlike Obama, Bloomberg's tech-savviness is real.

Also unlike Obama, Bloomberg would make a great President. He's a proven businessman and leader--not an image-based puppet for the left. And I say that being honestly bipartisan.

"I told Steve Jobs the other day, if he can improve on this, it'll really be amazing" I think meant that it would be hard to improve.

Curse you language for your many meanings.... cannot wait for iLanguage from Apple to get rid of confusions like this :)

Can we drop the "Magical" routine?

I'm a Apple fan and all, but the whole fawning over the iPad using the "Magical" moniker is just lame IMHO.

Yeah, that is pretty annoying.

I don't own one but I've used a few. Its great, but the "magic" in the device would be a lot stronger if it wasn't so heavy and dense. I don't see that happening anytime soon though, what with the huge battery & glass screen.
