Consumer Reports: Apple's Bumper fixes iPhone 4 antenna issue

The organization's report stated that "With the Bumper fitted, we repeated the test procedure, placing a finger on the Bumper at the point at which it covers the gap below. The result was a negligible drop in signal strength - so slight that it would not have any effect, in our judgment." Consumer Reports went on to say that duct tape would also do the trick, and that in their opinion, any fix should be done at Apple's cost and should not come out of the consumer's wallet.

While this doesn't provide an answer for other reported problems such as the "proximity sensor issue" or the "Bluetooth headset issue," it does lend some strength to speculation that Apple could announce a giveaway of Bumpers to all iPhone 4 owners at tomorrow's press conference. An offer of a free Bumper to every iPhone 4 owner would be a much less expensive solution to the antenna issue than a full-scale recall of the devices.

I don't know who is doing this testing but a bumper or tape DOES NOT< DOES NOT< DOES NOT< DOES NOT FIX THE PROBLEM

I have my sides covered will a full body case and I can reproduce the propel EVERY TIME by holding my iphone with my left hand in my palm. even after the 4.01 upgrade

it's even easier to display by opening up facebook with my phone in my left hand. Text will fill in but pictures will just sit there, empty. When I switch hands or change my grip, BOOM, pictures fill in.

Heads up for those of you that have the old apple composite video/audio cable or actually any old style iPhone synch cable - when you add the bumper, you can't attach the cable

Oh and the bumper interferes with the headphone plug too for a number of headphone cables (takes me back to the old 1G iPhone days)

I'm sure Apple will supply a free Dremel tool so we can 'fix' the older style audio and synch cables :-)

Will I get a free bumper? Will Apple compensate me for the bumper I bought with the phone?

Well, folks, I'm sure that Steve Jobs and other senior Apple personnel don't post on TUAW, so no-one can answer your questions. Why doesn't everyone just wait until theis news conference tomorrow is done and dusted with?

Well then, you should have had the decency to warn the rest of the buying public. Could have saved a lot of heartache...

Not just the apple bumper, but pretty much any case will solve the issue. Right now musing Switcheasy's Nude cover and I haven't been able to replicate the issue.

My biggest gripe is the proximity sensor issue.

This is going to totally screw over the third party case manufacturers.

I don't understand (if the iPhone 4 design is likable by most) why you would want a case/skin/bumper (or whatever) to cover the beautiful design of the new phone. it's pointless to put creativity into the design of something that's just going to be masked or covered. it's like buying a lamborghini, just to drive it around with a car cover on.

To paulosjonas and all of those other people who say to just return the phone, I have had a iphone since version one. I have accessories for it and I have apps for it. I'm not able to return those. would you like to refund me the money that I spent on all of those? It's not as simple as just returning the phone. Many of us use the phones for business and have purchased apps to assist with business. If I return the iphone for any other phone then we have to rebuy the apps for that phone (if they exist) and then cases, chargers, accessories, etc. And don't give me the whole "that's your fault for buying them " Apple runs their business and sells their accessories and apps with the idea that people will invest so much in their product that they won't want to switch. Therefore they are obligated to provide a product that lives up to the basic expectations. It's an iPHONE and if the PHONE part of it doesn't work then it's just an iPod touch that your paying AT&T for minutes and data. Personally I am more annoyed at the little software glitches that I'm finding, like the bluetooth muffling. I've also had calls come over that don't ring at all, the phone just vibrates and then the next call it will ring. this morning twice the phone rang and I answered a call but the ringer didn't stop. I'm sure these will be fixed with a software update so I'm not worried. But don't tell people that they shouldn't complain about something that doesn't work the way Steve Jobs bragged about in the keynote when they spent $200 to $300. Apple promised that this phone had the best reception ever because of the design and that's not the case for a lot of people.
