iOS 4.0.1 Software Update is available for download

The update works with iPhone 3G, 3GS, and 4. To install, simply sync your iPhone to iTunes and click the Update button on the Summary tab for your device. The download took about 7 minutes on my broadband connection, with further time required for the installation. TUAW will be posting further information about the efficacy of the update as soon as possible.

Update - After installing 4.0.1 on my iPhone 4, this blogger saw his maximum signal strength at his location peak at 4 bars, as opposed to 5 bars previously. Applying the "grip of death," the signal strength dropped to 1 bar but a call to a fellow blogger never dropped. Further tests coming.

Just another data point... I upgraded my 3G last night. Have noticed a little bit of a difference in signal strength, slightly lower than it was before. No real problems.

Possibly related, my phone had been pretty laggy since upgrading to 4.0. I was on the verge of wiping it and re-syncing apps and data to see if it would help, but after the 4.0.1 upgrade, it's got its old snap back. I have to say I'm pretty happy with that. I know it wasn't something specifically addressed in this update, but the simple act of re-loading may have taken care of the problem.

Own 3G... no problems with this update. 5 bars at work down to 4.

Phone also seems a bit quicker as well... though my exchange calendar is still super slow, but maybe a bit better after the update.

I wasn't going to get a new iphone until iOS4 made my 3G like a brick... now I might stay with my 3G and see if Verizon gets the iphone next year.

What exactly was this supposed to do? I have a 3GS with the new update and had 5 bars before and after this update. Ewww, the bars moved a little when I put it directly next to my Mac.

BTW, I use Softbank in Japan, so it seems to me that you people need to whine more to AT&T than to Apple. How about people using their iPhones in countries other than the USA, and post your experiences with the iPhone 4 or just the OS? It would be interesting to see just how many people have problems or is it just within the USA.

For those having crashes and errors when trying to install the update, here is a fix that worked for me. I'd been getting Error 9 crashes all day, then I came across a utility called "RecBoot." RecBoot can force your phone in or out of recovery mode. The problem seems to be that the firmware update does actually get installed, but the phone gets stuck in recovery mode. Let the update run and stall out while verifying firmware. Then after you get the error and click OK, run RecBoot Exit Only. This will kick your phone out of recovery mode and allow you to restore from backup. I got RecBoot from http://www.sebby.net/443-recboot-final-release/
Hope this helps those still having problems.

I don't know if I'm the only one in the world, but my iPhone 4 retains 5 bars with a case. Seriously people, a case fixes what "duct tape" fixes. I repeat: A case keeps good signals! The phone part of the 4 is better for me than the 3GS.

my iphone 4 just crashed on me after i tried to update to ios 4.0.1...I received an error message while it was trying to update my firmware update. The error was categorized as (9). I was prompted to restore my phone back to original factory setting and while it attempted to do that it crashed again with the same message. I'm currently on the phone with Apple technical support and the rep put me on hold because he needs to get the manager to resolve this issue...I will keep everyone posted.
