iOS 4.0.1 update: As expected, my iPhone 4 still can't place phone calls

I upgraded my iPhone 4 to iOS 4.0.1 and, big surprise (not), it still can't make phone calls if I'm holding the thing in my left hand using the kung fu grip of doom (i.e. the normal way I hold a phone). And, unsurprisingly, my 3GS still can make phone calls with the same grip in the same location.

I ran the Strength App, which we've discussed in previous posts about the iPhone 4 antenna issue. It is now showing a more nuanced level of how bad my home reception really is, but the bottom line remains the same. If I put on the Bumper, the thing can just barely make calls. Without, it can't.

The iPhone 4 just isn't a very good phone in low signal areas, which unfortunately is where my home seems to be. The difference is that my old phone never had a problem with those same signal conditions and my new iPhone 4 is crippled.

I know that Apple intended its update to change expectations -- fewer bars indicating less reliability -- but my expectations are that I should be able to make and receive calls in an area where I have already been doing so for the last three years, with Apple-branded equipment.

All I can say is, I am on my second phone and still doesn't work. So if millions of phones work, I am a million and 1, and mine doesn't.

@Ariel - Yes apple should be responsible for its horrible signal strength when other cell phones on ATT in the same spot in the same home in the same exact location can receive and make calls just fine.

Seriously you blame ATT for that?

ATT coverage is terrible, but the iphone is also terrible at receiving the signal compared to other phones on ATT service.

The iphone is proven by many people to be worse than other phones on ATT in receiving its signal and you people say we should blame ATT for that????

all I can say is WOW

problem is m4cG33k is that people like myself have used other cells phones in the same area and had great signal strength with no dropped calls and that changed with moving to the iphone...(and I can only speak for the 3gs)

My friend works at the Genius bar and admits that blaming ATT is the standard line. We all know ATT has terrible coverage but that doesn’t mean the iphone is a good phone.

I used an HTC phone for 2 years on ATT and had great signal strength in places that my new iphone can’t even received a signal. I cant blame ATT for that sorry.

I keep my iphone around because it’s a fun device but it’s still a horrible phone. I think it’s just hard for some people who have committed their trust and faith in Apple to believe they made a poor quality phone. People want to believe that Apple can only make products of the highest quality but it’s just not true at all.

I think what people are missing here is that the iphone just isn’t a good phone. I have had other phones for years and I always received better signal strength on ATT than I do with the iphone. I switched to the iphone because it’s a fun device but let’s all be honest it’s a terrible phone...compared to other cell phones it’s just horrid.

The sound quality isn’t better or as good as most other cell phones...its data 3g service seems crippled compared to my HTC on ATT…the same provider so sorry I can’t blame it on ATT… and I am not just using my own experience as the basis for this....I have dozens of friends who experienced the same thing.

But see I am no more a fan of Apple than I am of Microsoft or any other company...I am not a "fan boy" to any corporation so I have no rose colored glasses when I look at my devices… I spend my days living in reality and it a much better experience.

Hey Erica, where have you been? Did you even watch the Apple press conference? The 4.0.1 update was never intended to fix the issue with dropped calls. All they did was change the math involved with converting the signal strength to the number of bars displayed on the screen.

I'm sorry, but the premise of this post is utterly wrong. You wouldn't expect the same 'grip' to have the same effect on two different models with the antennae in different places.

Total straw man.

This is not the common experience of anyone that I know that uses the new iPhone. My iPhone 4 works MUCH better in my home that has very low signal--my 3GS couldn't hold a call there before at all. EVERY cell phone has some signal drop depending on where you hold it.

Combining two comments
1) there's no guarantee of good reception in poor signal areas (like rural CT where I live); with ANY phone, from ANY carrier.
2) microcells are the answer, got AT&T's during their 100% rebate deal, 5 bars. Yes it costs a bit more per month but we now can use our iPhones for calls, saving $ on regular landline phone service.

If you cant make calls at all or barely if you have the bumper on I don't see why you are still using the iPhone 4? You would think that Apple would take it back or exchange if you show them that it is functioning that badly.

Fortunately for me my iPhone 4 is functioning great, no noticeable single loss or bar reductions, only one dropped call and speedtest.net says I get about 20% faster download speeds on Avg than I was getting with the 3Gs.

i don't think there has ever been a product line where every single iteration is 100% better than the last. If you buy a new stereo and it doesn't do all the things you want it to, do you call the company and demand they come to your house and add features? No, you return it and buy something else. People develop high expectations of Apple products and are disappointed by those not being met. The difference with Apple is that people love their products so much that the thought of returning them isn't and option. There IS something going on with the signal, if you can't deal, return it, otherwise hold it different or whatever. Step back, be objective and if you don't like the product because it doesn't work for you, return it.
